@Anonymous

Hmm interesting, I'm able to attach a zip file just fine...you are using chrome, right? I would say a .zip would be best, as opposed to a .7z that you have in your screenshot maybe.

If using a different web browser, and a regular zip file deosn't work for you, please let me know!

It may be something that @aaron.tw can help us figure out 😄

Hi. I need help how to connect this flange with the tube in Max 2018? A step by step guide will help me. I do it until this point with the Attach, but is not good at all.

Hi @Anonymous

Great to hear from you on the forums!

Before I can help you, I could use some clarification, is your end goal to have the two meshes combined into one? Are you using the attach tool from the sub-object mode from your command panel drop-down? here are a few other options that you can try from this article.

Use the Collapse Utility to collapse multiple selected objects into a single object:

Select all objects you want to collapse into a single object, then go to the Command Panel > Utilities > Collapse, select the Collapse options, then click on Collapse Selected.

Use the Boolean tool:

See the 3ds Max Help file on Boolean Operations. (Note: to detach Boolean object operands after merging, see the "Operands" information in the 3ds Max Help file.)

When you try to use the attach tool, is there an error that pops up? Or do the two meshes just fail to combine?

I look forward to helping you resolve this issue 😄

Is my end goal to have the two meshes combined into one.And at the other end to add a flange, too.

Both objects are in editable Poly.

I try it with the Modify--edit Geometry -- Attach and not attached 100%, the gap is still there. The two meshes just fail to combine.

I try it with Utilities--Collapse . I selected both and still not doing the Union.

The blue object is to witch i want to add the yellow -flange.

The Boolean : single and multiple selections. And is not doing nothing.

mml

I have no clue what i doing wrong.

Thank you.

Hi @Anonymous

Looks like you may be able to use the Bridge tool! So the Attach tool only attaches the objects at the Object level, what you may be able to do is merge them at the Subobject level.

Select the objects

Attach them

Select Edges, and then select the rim of both the bottom and top by shift+double clicking

navigate to the Bridge Tool

Keep in mind, this will only work if both objects objects are roughly the same poly density

Here are some screenshots for reference.

Hi. Sorry, but just today i received the email with your answer from Autodesk forum.

I think the objects don't have the same poly density .

Have an idea how to check this and make roughly the same poly density? And after this to try again with your suggestion.

Thanks.

@Anonymous

It would take a combination of 3D modeling tools to bridge your two objects together, I would suggest watching this video on the Graphite modeling tools in 3DS Max, by using the weld vertex tool, bridging individual polygons together, and some patience, you can merge the two shapes together.

Here is a video that explains some of the tools you could use to do this.

I hope this helps!

I would love to test your file on my machine, to attach a 3DS Max file on the forums, first zip up the file, then you can use the attach feature 😄

Hmm interesting, I'm able to attach a zip file just fine...you are using chrome, right? I would say a .zip would be best, as opposed to a .7z that you have in your screenshot maybe.

If using a different web browser, and a regular zip file deosn't work for you, please let me know!

Hi @Anonymous

the two objects you gave me were Meshes, I converted them to poly's, which work better with the graphite modeling tools.

The 2 objects had a lot of overlapping faces and were closed geometric shapes, which is part of why the Bridge tool didn't work for you.

I have attached a file walking through the steps I took to get 2 similar shapes merged.

create 2 cylinders with an equal number of sides.

convert those objects to editable poly.

in the edges subobject mode, double click the edges you want to bridge together.

select the bridge tool.

I hope this clears up any confusion on how to use the tools 😄

In regard to the object you are trying to edit together, I would suggest walking through the above steps first, and seeing whats missing!

Hi @Anonymous

Thanks for the reply! I'm still working through what attributes you want to be editable/adjustable, with this type of complex shape, it may be a little difficult to keep all elements as adjustable, and merged into the same shape.

In regard to the holes in your lathe, I would recommend using a boolean operation! When 2 objects intersect, a boolean can help merge, union or subtract those shapes. Here is what that would look like on the object you are envisioning.

I have attached a similar file below that you can test on using the boolean operation already applied.

To create an adjustable mesh, you may want to model the shape in Splines, and use the Bevel modifier instead, here is a video walking through how to do that.

I hope this helps!

I do it from the video ,but is not what I need.

from front view the 2 flanges I need .the neck from one is higher ( 2mm ) and the other is less inside the flange (-2mm) . when I stick together are not sliding from each other.

here I do it both with extrude . To the inner ellipse I need thickness of neck to be 1mm. I give it thickness ,but I don't know how to fill it. Is a way to fill the inside of flange totally? but the holes and the middle ellipse to not be filled? After is fill it can I go back and change just the inside ellipse or other object alone , or not? in this way can be Union with the tube?

@Anonymous

I would first say that this may be a job better done in something like Autodesk Inventor, or a similar tool. 3DS Max is primarily used for lighting, rendering and modeling in film or non precise product rendering.

If those shapes are made from splines, and you need them to retain their scalable, editable nature, I believe the best way to create this object is with a series of boolean shapes, here is what that would look like.
