Hi.

I've run into this weird problem when applying turbo smooth. I created a simple box , applied a chamfer modifier and then applied turbo smooth on top. As you can see some of the edges have become black and this shading issue is also visible when rendered. Any idea why is this happening?

Hi,

This is a smoothing groups problem, the chamfered faces are not blended well with the adjacent

Faces, so you need to enable the option "Smooth Chamfer Only" and, at the same time check

The option "Smooth To Adjacent".

I'm sending a Max file with the box I made so you can compare the parameters:

https://drive.google.com/file/d/1KyQrrxmVwmo5Gr1H4B1KwOv6h5pVz7kt/view?usp=sharing

Now for the last image without the Chamfer, it's normal what you see,

If you orbit the scene you'll see the dark shading will shift based on the view angle,

This is related to the Vertex Normals orientations. Try adding an Edit Normal modifier

So you can visualize the Normals.

I managed to reproduce this by adding an Edit Poly modifier,

But in your case, if this is what you're getting without adding anything, it's hard

To tell what's going on. It's a Normals orientation issue, but I never had the 2017 version before,

So i guess you can look for updates maybe it can change something.

I can suggest resetting your User Settings if you like:

1- Close 3DS Max

2- go to: C:\Users\YourUserName\AppData\Local\Autodesk\3dsMax\20xx - xxbit

3- Rename the folder called ENU to something else like ENU.old

4- Restart 3DS Max

Note: AppData is a hidden folder, so you need to enable the visibility of hidden files and folders

From the Control Panel

Also, you'll lose any custom UI or any custom 3rd party macroscript you installed.

If renaming the ENU doesn't help, then close Max, delete the newly created ENU folder,

And then rename the old one ENU again, this way when you restart 3DS Max you'll get back

All your custom UI and Macsroscripts.

I think ive figured it out. it was a shading problem. when viewport is set to standard I get that display glitch, once it's set to Performance or other options the model is displayed correctly. weird.

It's also a good idea to test your scene a real situation, I mean by placing lights and doing a render with

GI, since in the end, this is how things will be done.

Another thing, in TurboSmooth there is a parameter that can improve the Normals quality in

Display and Rendering, and that is "Explicit Normals", you can find it in the Main rollout.

Below are 2 screenshots for Before and After checking this option:

1- Before

2- After

Note: Use this option if Turbosmooth is your last modifier in the stack, or, at least, you're not going to

Add any modifier that can change the topology of your object, like an Edit Mesh modifier or something like that.
