Hi @hagen.deloss,

All good?

Had some experience with this workflow. Here's something I like to check:

Many a time the object (terrain for example) comes into 3ds max looking solid, and it is, however each poly is separate.

If I use element selection and only select one poly instead of the whole terrain then I know we have an issue!

Element selection mode

Welding all the vertices of the object and collapsing to an edit poly does wonders for viewport navigation, computational overhead, and of course, file size. (I always go with a vert threshold of 0.01, not 0.1)

Weld vertices

Hope that helps?

i am trying to open complex cad model inside 3ds max with polycount ranging around 80 million. Although it is able to import them it taking around more than 1 hrs to import plus there is lag also in the model. Following is my system configuration:-
HDD 500GB 7200RPM SATA 3.5in

GFX NVIDIA Quadro P6000 24GB

CPU I 4116 Xeon2.1 12C

RAM 16GB (2x8GB) DDR4 2666 ECC 1CPU APJ

could someone suggest how could i can improve the importing time & lag inside the model?

@Anonymous

Thanks for bringing your question to the forums, it looks like you are visiting as a new member to the 3DS Max forum. I want to extend a warm welcome to the Autodesk Community!

Optimizing cad models before import isn't something I am very familiar with, but I can give you some suggestions for once you are inside 3ds Max so you can experience less viewport performance issues. First, I have a few questions.

What version of 3ds Max are you working in?

Are you able to save a Max file after importing the cad model? If so, how big is the file size?

In general, imported nested objects, or groups of geometry seems to cause a lot of viewport performance issues, so anything to minimize the amount of nested objects or layers will probably help in this situation.

After importing, converting all scene objects to an editable poly also seems to help in these circumstances.

If there is a smaller test file you have on hand that has similar issues, I can try taking a look at the file.

I hope to talk with you soon!

Did you try changing curve steps value in the import cad panel?

Hi @Anonymous

I wanted to update you on the private message you sent me last week, I tried to open the 700+mb file you provided, but after 20 minutes of trying to merge or import the file, I gave up! I'm not sure if my machine is as powerful as yours 😄

Here are some things to double check.

3ds Max scene files take longer than normal to open

How to optimize performance in very large (1+ gigabyte) 3ds Max scenes

I will also send you a few maxscript files via a private message so you can clear out any unused animation tracks.

If your scene just includes geometry, I would suggest converting the geometry to an editable poly, then exporting the geometry as an OBJ, and re-importing it into a blank scene.

Let me know if any of these steps help!
