topic UI Showing Black around Safe Frames in 3ds Max Forum

Just installed Max 2019. Clean Install. When showing the viewport with safe frames the left and right of it are black instead of the neutral gray color. I can't find any setting in the UI>Colors menu that changes that back to gray. The odd thing is that using the light scheme changes it back to neutral gray but none of the color settings change.

I guess the black color is default behavior.

Is there any way to change it to a neutral gray - the contrast is really distracting and I don't know why there's no setting anywhere to change it from black...

Hi,

Go to Preferences settings, Viewports and disable Mask Viewport to Safe Region.

Wait that wasn't it. Now it's showing the scene expanding beyond the safe frame lines. I want it to be "masked" still. - just in gray instead of solid black...

First, go to Viewport Configuration, Background tab (Alt+B) and make sure "Use customize User Interface Gradient Colors" is selected.

Second, Go to Customize, Customize User Interface, Colors tab, in the elements dropdown list select Viewports. On the list, just below, go to Viewport Background and set your gray color, you will need higher value than your actual gray (highly suggest to try with a pure red to see how it works because the changes are really subtle). Go back to the list and check the Viewport Gradient Background Top and Bottom and make sure they represent your actual viewport color that you want (No red needed here ). Click Apply.

Or you can do the inverse Config, using the gradient color as the mask area.
