I'm a novice on using 3ds max, and I'm facing a terrible issue where the imported obj has groups of edges disjointed from one another when modifying as poly, creating visible lines on the object, which can be torn apart when running smoothing options or sculpting in MudBox/ZBrush.

I imported a hand obj into 3ds max as an editable mesh.

I select edit poly from the modifier list, and it creates visible lines.

These visible lines/seams will tear if you try to sculpt it on MudBox/ZBrush. Image below is done in MudBox.

Running smoothing options such as TurboSmooth or MeshSmooth creates tears and cracks from any of these lines

How and what are the ways/workflows to make sure that these lines/seams/tears/cracks will not appear? It seems like sculpting will always convert the obj into polymesh and therefore resulting in these lines which can be torn.

Hi @Anonymous ,

Have you tried resetting the xform of your object withing the utilities panel ?

Just to reset the scale of the object, then transform into an editable poly, then select all the points ( or the ones which seems to be not connected ), weld them using the appropriate threshold, and finally applying a smooth modifier to the editable poly ?

I guess it should work like this 😉 Just keep us posted about what's happening

nope, resetting XForm does no change unfortunately. the lines are still there, and cracks can be seen after applying smoothing options.
