I can already tell you that's the problem. This image has aleady had the perspective corrected. It's not "real" perspective with a real vanishpoint anymore. You'll have a difficult time getting a perfect match. But turning on "Allow Distorted View" will help you.

If you can get that image before it was corrected and do the Perspective Match it will work. Then add your objects. Once you are finished, then do the verticals correction at the very end and it will all look great.

Hi

It seems that this issue persists since max 2022

Vanishing points keeps moving if a camera is created

I cannot make it work no matter what

using perspective will work but create a camera everthing brokes

Saving the file and active perspective view also brokes

Ill try to record something

There are two things that I've found will affect Perspective Match.

1. If the image you are matching has ever had any perspective correction done to it, then it's not 'real world' perspective. For instance, if you have an architectural exterior view and the verticals have been corrected in Photoshop prior to bringing it to Max for matching, then Perspective Match (PM) can't figure out what to do because real physics and perspective has been broken. In that case, it works better if you make sure to check the box 'Allow Distorted View' so PM knows that it's dealign with sometning that's not real perspective anymore.

2. Don't use PM in a Camera view. Do it in a Perspective view and when finished using it, then do a 'Create/Cameras/Create Physical Camera From View.' Often users new to PM will just make a camera viewport and start doing a PM. That often works badly.

If you can upload the scene I'd be happy to look at it.

Thanks Rob

I cannot get the original image.

I practice with Archdaily projects and photos are already corrected so in this cases Perspective Match wont work

Understood. But that's your problem. It's not a problem with Max. An image that has been modified and straightened is not in real world perspective anymore and Perspective Match can't work with it. The physics is just wrong. You'll have to fudge it.

My problem? seriously?

If Autodesk put those "restrictions" in the Help, maibe we could know that the tool doesnt work that way

The only note that its placed is:

"Important: The camera must be a Free Camera. If the viewport belongs to a Target Camera, 3ds Max displays a warning about that in the viewport"

Theres no other warning or note about, if the tool cant use an image with these "adjustments" they need to put it also as an important note, if the camera is not supported while using the tool they need to warning that too.

You cannot assume that everybody knows that.

I understand your frustration. No one said it was your problem. There are 1000s of things in Max that take some time to learn how to use and little documentation as to how to use them. If you took perspective geometry in school then you know how perspective and vanishing points work. If you break the two point perspective it just won't work. It's math and the 'Perspective Match' function is based on that math. So if you artifically modify and image and straighten anything, you break that math. Then Perspective Match wil fail as it can't figure it out. It's that simple.

The more you use a tool the more you learn about it and the more you keep an open mind to learning from others, then your knowledge will increase as well.

I'm terrible with Biped and I've spent hours trying to master it. It's not my fault or Max's fault that I have trouble with it and I can never seem to find the info I need to use it properly. Again, it's no one's fault. I just haven't worked with the right people or had the right people instruct me and get me going. Often doing tons of videos on Youtube will help me learn something I just can't seem to figure out. I'll often watch 3 or 4 tutorials just to finally see someone explain "that one" thing that was driving me crazy. It takes a lot of time, and maybe time you may not have when you have a deadline, but it is what it is.

Again, you did nothing wrong and no one is saying you did. There are just a lot of things in Max you have to figure out yourself and that's not Autodesk's fault. It's experience and it takes a long time to gain.

Best advice, find another solution. The perspective tool has been janky for as long as I can remember, even before 2022. Don't even waste your time with it.

Some users swear by the Camera Tracker Utility. Scriptspot used to have some 3rd party scripts which do a passable job (but it's been a while, can't name many other than this one), or the vast majority of studios I've worked in use Syntheyes. The permanent license is spendy but... permanent.
