Select & move, Select and rotate problem

Ive been working on a project for a while, it was going fine, but suddenly the things i click on to move/rotate along a certain axis have vanished.

Ive spent hours trying to fix this infuriating problem. Can someone please help.

Ive tried pressing x - which seems to be a recommended answer, but that just opens a box that says 'Search all Actions'.
Ive tried going to Customize - Preferences - Gizmos. Everything was already turned on, but i tried turning them off and on again to see if that could somehow make the program start showing them again - but nothing.
I feel like i've tried every option. I even tried opening a new project to see if it was some setting with this specific project, but it's the same with brand new projects now. It means i'm essentially unable to use 3ds Max at all anymore as placing, moving and adjusting anything is now a huge problem.

Any advice would be hugely appreciated. Thank you.

reset 3ds max to your default settings see if this fixes the problem? or have you already tried this?

Hi,

That is called the "Gizmo". The old hotkey was X - that was changed a version or 2 back to Ctrl+Shift+X.Always a good idea to mention what version you are using.

If that hotkey combo doesn't work for you go into the hotkey editor (or customize menu if on older version) and search for "Show Transform Gizmo" - see if there is an assigned hotkey - if not assign one (best to use Ctrl+Shift+X probably).

If still no joy you might try re-setting your preference as previously suggested.

This worked. I tried the other method with the x shortcut, but that didnt do anything.

Is it safe for me to delete the old ENU folder?

if they change the hotkey as @Daf said from x to Ctrl+Shift+X. then there is your problem, you could go back and reassign the hotkey back to X, if the X is not assigned to something else, if it is this may cause a conflict

Sure, if you are sure you won't need anything from it. Might not hurt to keep it around a bit to be sure. 😉
