What kind of environment, the standard override? It's simply a color. Without a narrow, bright spot/light you won't get any highlights.

Perhaps upload a stripped down scene (saved back to the oldest 3ds max version possible).

You might also consider downloading the sample scene in question and render it yourself with the material applied.

Hi @Anonymous

More information is needed from you. There are many different reasons for different results with materials in Max vs external programs or textures (e.g., Viewport Display settings, scene lighting, type of material, selected render engine, etc, ) so please post screenshots of your materials in max vs what you want and it will help figure out what the issue is.

@Anonymous

What type of material are you using in Max (Vray, Physical, Standard, other) ? Is the target material you are trying to emulate a PBR material by any chance? For that you need multiple maps to effectively create the result. In theory, you can reproduce the result procedurally, but it is probably harder to get a perfect match. Regarding the material display in the material editor, in the Render Setup Dialogue (at the very end) , there is a rollout called "Assign Renderer" that lets you separately set the render engine for the material editor. Generally this should be set to be locked to the current renderer.

If you like the changes made in the material editor, try implementing the same lighting changes in the scene for render purposes if you haven't already done so. A dome light with hdri image lighting can greatly improve rendering. Otherwise it's just down to tweaking the settings in your material. There is no MaX bug here as far as I can tell from your posts. In your image above for instance the noise map seemed too strong and was messing up the surface smoothness.
