Ctrl+Doubleclick, loop button, have stopped activating edge loop selection

When I press ctrl+doubleclick on an edge, the edge loop selection will not be activated, something I always use. This happens even if I create a new cylinder and try it on the edge segments of the face of the cylinder and when I click on the loop button. What could be the reason?

I am noticing that using inset command on face of cylinder, then trying edge loop selection on the same outer edge, it works.

Loop works with quads, so if you have 5 sided faces surrounding it, it gets confused and stops there. That's why the inset allows it to work again. Is that what you mean?

It looks like that is it. The edge has to have quads on both sides. If it doesn't then edge loop selection will not work.

It's the same in a number of other software I use. I guess it can't be sure it's a loop unless it knows the lay of the land. Thanks for the confirmation.
