I redid a room using AEC walls which are super easy to use, except that the doors that come with the AEC thing aren't flexible enough for my design. so if i have to cut boolean openings in every wall, its more work than what i did already

so i think maybe i'll just assign different ids to the surfaces on my edit poly

i'm trying to apply one material to the inside or my wall (a box with an edit poly modifer) and another to the outside, however, neither seem to work

i drag the material which is the same one i use on the mattress, its quite detailed, and drag onto the selected poly but i i get is flat color. any ideas? thanks

by the way, i tried adding a UVW map and i can get all faces of the poly to show the material but don't know how to apply to only one face

Research multi-subobject materials. You can assign different materials to a object by associating different IDs to sub-surfaces of an object where each ID determines which material will be used. If you had used a AEC Wall object to create your walls then different IDs would be assigned to the the wall's insides, outside, and edges. IF you need to apply material maps to the different subobjects you can control their orientation and scale independently by assigning different channels to the maps but for your application it should be sufficient just to edit the IDs. I would suggest converting the object to an editablepoly before editing IDs and not leave it as just a modifier.

if you convert down then you will lose the holes that max automatically cuts out if you are using windows and doors and you will have to boolean them as you know and that will make more of a mess of the geometry.

If you start modeling a wall using the Max AEC Wall object then Max will automatically create holes in the wall for doors and windows as is demonstrated in the Screencast below. I do not believe that starting with a box object followed by the addition of an Edit Poly modifier will yield an object that will automatically creates holes. I think the OP should get comfortable using the AEC Wall objects for in addition to automatically creating holes for door and windows it assigns different IDs to each wall side further simplifying editing.

Screencast

i looked into using AEC Wall object when i started but worried that it was not flexible enough for my needs. for example, the corners of all 4 of my rooms are all glass, i wasn't sure that was possible with AEC Wall object. also i'm not sure how to handle walls up to a curved, sloping roof

ok, so i got basic color to work on my edit poly, it seems they automatically come with 5 ids, so i make a multi sub object and applied the inside and outside colors like this, so thanks, its working

then i tried to make the bathroom wall tiles on the inside like this

i create a vraymtl and in the diffuse i use the tiles thing, then i set a bitmap for the tile input and the preview of the

tile object  looks great

but the vraymtl doesn't look right, when i apply it to a surface i get flat grey. in the pic above its on the mattress and the bathroom wall

any ideas, i had this working with physical material before but now i switched to vray, i don't see that as an option

i also tried a simple bitmap in the difuse slot and same thing, just flat grey

UPDATE, i just found i had to click M next to difuse and deselect real world then at least the vraymtl preview looks correct. i ceated a simple material with a blue mosaic tile to test

but same problem when i apply to object in viewport, all i get is the difuse color
