I had the same question as you. I just added NVme drives to my machine. The speed increase helps Max when it's reading the drive like when opening, saving, importing and if it is reading from the disk should your RAM overflow (hopefully that last bit is rare because no matter what it's sloooooow.)

I've seen a massive improvement over my entire system. Max opens more than twice as quickly and Max has gotten slower to open with each version it seems to me. 2021 took 1.75 mins to open on my previous machine and it was all SSD and a high quality custom built desktop. It now opens in 36 seconds. Photoshop has gotten painfully slow to open. It now opens in 10 seconds. I used to open Photoshop and then go do something else and come back it was so slow. Now it's really fast to open.

Those "opening" and "loading" minutes add up and over a full day then can be significant. So, I personally upgrading to NVMe is a smart choice if you have the opportunity to do it. A lot of motherboards don't support them but if so, I think you'll like it of you spring for them.

I've attached benchmarks for two drives. The left one is NVMe (C:) and the right one is SSD (D:). They are amazing drives.

You've probably had a bad Sata Drive, because on my experience there is no difference at all, not in loading times, not saving or opening scenes, of course my NVME only 3.0 x4, but I think higher rates M.2 would be the same.

My Sata drive is Samsung 860 PRO 500GB (MLC)

My M.2 Samsung 970 Evo 1TB (TLC)

Yea, I don't think that was is, a bad SATA drive. I'm pretty tech savvy and I would have known. I spend hours tracing these kinds of things down. It was more likely some other bottle neck on my machine but not SATA. Actually, it's still an issue in that users here report that their opening times are still much faster than what I experience. And, I'm on a completely different computer over the past year or so and nothing has changed or improved. I'm used to is so no big deal, but it is something I keep my eye on in case I start to see problems other then just loading the statup routine.

I had bad opening(3ds max application) times too, but 50% of that time was corona renderer, which I've solved, so mine now is 32-36 seconds too. On a faster PC(faster, fresher CPU(probably that is your bottleneck) and system) you could see 26 seconds, but it's all speculation because there is so many factors(plugins etc).

What I'm saying is that I've received no difference at all after I've changed good Sata drive to good Nvme.
