Hello,

I am trying to find a solution to a situation with 3ds Max 2020 and Simplygon 9 (latest update). When I export a model from 3ds Max assigned with a Max standard material, the material is inverted or black after optimization. I have been trying to discuss this issue with them as well, and they said it could be due to handling the alpha in the material upon export. How do I disable/remove the alpha, and just export models with RGB materials? Is RGBA an option by default?

My photoshop file shows no alpha channel to delete in the channels view. To my knowledge, everything that is default with the 3ds Max standard material does not involve the alpha or use it. I'm not sure where to turn next.

System type 64-bit operating system, x64-based processor

Edition Windows 10 Pro for Workstations
Version 21H1
Installed on ‎2/‎1/‎2021
OS build 19043.1110

Thanks!

The material being black or 'inverted' sounds more like maybe your surface normals are inside out more than anything. If you invert them, any improvement?

What kind of file are you exporting as the texture? Did you try another file type?

I thought the same thing upon importing the model into 3ds Max after optimization, then I applied a new material to it and it was fine. And then I checked the material folder, and the materials themselves turned black.

We've started testing different file types for 3D models, materials, etc. JPG, PNG, PSD. All of them have come back black. All with default settings and a standard material from 3ds Max. I'm not sure if there is a setting to change in Max, in Photoshop, or both.

Weird. Does it only happen after it's been loaded into another app? Or does it happen right out of max? Have you installed the updates for 2020?

It's only after it comes out of Simplygon 9. They say it could possibly be due an alpha channel that is present. Is there a way to disable the alpha in 3ds Max materials?

Installing the 3ds Max 2020.3 update now. I can do another test after that and let you know what happens.

It's not because of any alpha channel, there's something else at play. Some bug in Simplygon or maybe a windows issue. Do other file types work? What if you try to export to a different location?

Throughout our tests, non of the file types have worked so far, when exporting using a standard material with the default settings (this includes a variation of OBJ, FBX Binary, FBX ASCII, PSD, PNG, JPG).

For some reason, there have been tests that work with importing and exporting out of Blender. Taking the FBX files from 3ds Max, and exporting them from Blender with embedded materials.

Location, like desktop versus working folder?

Worth a shot I suppose. There's something strange going on here, I don't see how max is at fault though. Maybe your current renderer doesn't support standard materials in the viewport? (thus the blackness?)

Hi, I have the same issue but I'm wondering if this is a 3ds max issue because there are some assets that are technically ok. I noticed that after even using the integrated plugins, some of the assets have no material IDs assigned to them after the optimization. Is this a known issue?
