Hi, there is a tutorial to allow you to create a button (or a key combination) that can save to a lower version here:
https://3dground.net/en/prod/save-to-lower-3040149

This might be the second best option just in case you have a few scenes that need to be done all at the same time:

http://www.scriptspot.com/3ds-max/scripts/batch-save-3ds-max-files-to-previous-version

Is there a way I can save from Max 2019 to Max 2017 without selecting it via the dropdown menu, in the 'Save as' dialog box? Or a way the default 'Save as' state can be set to Max 2017?

Some of the team are using 2017, and I don't always remember to save it down to that version.
