Just to add my comments to this;

I always save down to sketchup version 8, no matter what the format comes in as, or what the current version of max says it accepts. You can get a free home-use version of Sketchup to aid in this process if needs be. It's 'non commercial' if you just use it on a spare laptop, that is not part of the final project. I just use Sketchup Free as a standalone converter instance. A means to an end. The sooner the file is out of SketchUp the better. IMHO.

Also handy to note is there is a great free Extention to SketchUp called:

http://sketchucation.com/forums/viewtopic.php?p=193587#p193587

This will get rid of a lot of the superfluous fluff that comes with a vanilla SketchUp file save or export that will only serve to confuse 3DSMax. It also dramatically reduces the filesize of SKPs and leads to a lot less problems down-the-line when using a more 'Grown-up' type software package such as 3DSMax.

Regards,

Hello,

We received SketchUp 2018 models from a rendering firm and are unable to open them in 3ds Max 2021. The current info on the importer says that "the newer default importer can import any SketchUp files." Bold claim...

They sent us two different files, and both give the same error message when importing. The legacy importer also does not work.

We don't use SketchUp so making changes to the files themselves is not an ideal option, though I'd be willing to pay for the program just to keep this from eating into our deadline.

Thanks!

Jinmu Staddon

Thank you for reaching out to us.

Can you share that SketchUp model for us to debug it? As a workaround, can you ask your source to resave that SketchUp model to an older version of SketchUp, e.g., save it to SketchUp 2015 or older, then import this SketchUp file using the legacy importer?

Best regards,

Just reviving this thread to see if you'd been able to send your example files to Libei, and if this Sketchup importer issue was still a problem. Please let us know, and thanks!

Hi Jon,

Sorry if I never followed through on this. I actually don't quite remember at this point how things resolved. I think we either found someone with the software that could do the conversion for us, or did a free trial/bought it and did it ourselves. Thanks for following up though.

Jinmu
