Oh - found a way: load the .tif via OSL-BitmapLookUp (switch off AutoGamma) and mount it in the Displace-modifier's Map-slot (not Bitmap!).

Hello, I am trying to use a .tif file as displacement map. The file was created from a DSM (a Digital elevation model) in QGIS. However, I am prompted with an Image I/O error: error reading tif file. The file worked just fine in Rhino, see result below:

Though I was hoping to have more fine grained control in Max regarding the top and bottom displacement heights.

The file in question is attached below as is the DTM, which also prompts the same error.

When importing it via OSL-BitmapLookUp it works flawlessly - unfortunately the Displace-modifier utilizes the standard Bitmap-node 😞
The only way I got it to work was converting the .tif to an .exr. GIMP gave me also a warning (undefined field) but opened it.

Photoshop also had issues with the file, though I am not sure why. I ended up resolving it for the current project with a PNG + Heightfield in Rhino. With some reference points for the scaling, worked better than the plugin I tested (from the 3D pic).

Ah thanks, I'll try and use that for the terrain, which is quite janky due to the PNG conversion. Good to know!

And of course you can use the Displace-function in the Arnold-Properties-modifier instead of the Displace-modifier.

Arnold's own "Image" map type also works.
