I have this same issue - moving from 3dsmax 2016 that worked flawlessly to 2025.

So many selection issues. Also top view small selections will include larger objects, cameras, etc. It drives me crazy.

Did you ever find a solution?

Hi,
I used 3dsmax for over 10 years, now I mostly work on files with thousands of objects overlapping Like engines, vehicles etc.
now selecting object is a NIGHTMARE the least to say. not a single time the app is highlighting the need object which is the one directly under the mouse. it highlight all other objects and this is really FRUSTRATING.
please advice.
thanks

@Wes.ElQushairy

2 things that help in the situation with multiple objects under the cursor are:

1) If you click and max selects the object you don't want then click a 2nd time without moving the mouse and max will select a different object that is under the object. Keep clicking until you get the one you want. In a very heavy scene with many objects it could take a second or 2 for max to toggle to the next object under the cursor. I am not sure how well known this feature of max is, but it works for me, although I have not tested it an a scene/view angle with more than 2 or 3 objects under the cursor. You may have to change the view angle to reduce the number of objects under the cursor at the same time to more quickly find the object you want.

2) sometimes toggling to wireframe (F3) (or back to shaded) will help you get a different object under the cursor when clicking

thanks for the reply, unfortunately this may not be a practical way to deal with complex scenes, clicking until my luck gives me the needed object is not a solution.
the issue is the app is trying to pick objects away from the mouse.

is there a threshold maybe for this? is this some kind of smart selection feature?

You should observe the object selection cycling through all 25 objects very quickly.

But if you are not getting that expected behavior, then something likely is different about your scene. Maybe if your objects are imported from other programs, the surface normals are messed up in some way and max is having a hard time selecting them? What version of Max are you using and what scene unit setup?

I mean away from the depth, not the very first object under the cursor, and this is with all scenes, as far as I remember this behavior started from 2012, I am currently using latest 2021, and 2022. I am almost sure it is a feature introduced 2012 maybe earlier. named smart selection or something.

I am not sure what is the genius algorithm that makes the app think what object I may want to select.

I never even noticed the pixel selection radius setting, so I will file it away for future reference. I wonder if it matters more with 2K monitors vs 4K monitors since each pixel would occupy more screen space on a 2K monitor vs 4K monitor.

FYI, I found this short video on how setting the selection pixel radius lower than the default of 16 helps with more precisely making cuts into geometry as well.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kEaVtVjCQm4
