Title is self explanatory, but need some assistance to that.

Whenever i open 2 instances of 3dsmax (2021 and 2023 at the same time), windows 11 performance is very slow. Cannot do anything while it get´s slow.

Pc settings:

i9 12900ks
rtx 2090
64gb of ram

Any ideas? How can i help Autodesk to identify issues?

Probably something with windows 11. I can have the same versions and multiple copies open with no issues in windows 10.

Just curious to ask, are you using NVIDIA studio drivers by chance? Myself and a few associates have had trouble with it. The gaming drivers worked better.

Tks! I have been back and forth with studio drivers x game drivers. Will give a shot another time to make sure. But i believe it is a performance issue with Windows 11. But now i cannot go back to windows 10 to test 😕
But i wonder Autodesk should take a deep look to validate this issue.

Historically production 3D software is not used on brand new OS's. There are too many things to work on out both sides and it takes a couple years to iron out the wrinkles. Maybe you can run one of them in some kind of compatibility mode since 2021 for example isn't supported on Windows 11.

I understand that a year is not much on a OS lifespan. But it would be good to shine a light for thousands of people that already has Windows 11 or bought equipment on last year, that there´s an issue and try to fix it.

Windows 11 doesn´t have compatibility mode on Windows 10, only Windows 8 at the moment.

The problem is that 2021 will never be fixed on an OS that it's not supported on. Look inward for a solution as 2021 will never be W11 compatible. I suppose thousands of individual users will have to re-learn lessons that the industry has known for 30+ years.

That... is a good question. 🤔 I thought it only happened with 2021 and 2023 together, perhaps I misread something in an earlier post.

The answer is likely still the same though. "It's a new OS and as such is prone to errors and problems until at least service pack 2." The fix is probably out there somewhere, but until more people have the problem there's no easy way to test and or debug something like this. It could be a service you have running, and missing C++ redis (or altered one), a piece of hardware that has a partially unsupported driver... any number of things and that's before even looking at 3dsmax.

A quick google does show that lots of people are having slowness problems on Windows 11, so it's not just you. File explorer for many is super slow and a host of other problems. This is a good example why for production you never use the latest OS until it's been vetted. I do realize that's not what you want to hear, but hopefully this is a lesson folks only have to learn once. And with modern phones requiring updates on the OS all the time, it's a different sort of attitude and I'm sure for the younger users it's a bit confusing.

For what it's worth, I don't even install a new version of 3dsmax until update 2 for the exact same reasons. And Unity, and UDK, and Photoshop, and.... you get the idea.

I realize my post came off gruff and that's not my intention, a morning person I am not. This goes back to the concept of Bleeding Edge which originates in the 80's.

But that does not help you. The best plan is to list out as many details about your system as possible and hope that someone else with this problem finds the thread and does the same. Eventually it will become obvious that (for example) everyone has a DVD-drive by Acmetech or w/e and the drivers for it are bad which causes Windows to constantly scan for a new disc even when the tray is empty. Or... that 3dsmax is using a .net feature that has been recently changed by MS. Or... well who knows... that's the bleeding part of the edge.

Apologies for coming off gruff. I've just seen this thread with every new release of windows.

I think perhaps the issue is more along the lines of Max 2021 and Win 11? Is it absolutely necessary to use it instead of 2022? I'm guessing it's a plugins thing, but thought I'd ask. Windows 11 has been overall both very stable and given excellent performance since I've been using it (within a few weeks of its release). A few thoughts:

How's Max 2021 run without anything else going? Is it something where it's all good, and as soon as Max 2023 opens up performance hits a wall or is it gradual?

Have you tried opening them in different orders? 2021 first then 2023, and vice/versa?

What about taking a look at the Event Viewer? Might be some things happening that the system is logging that could give a clue of what's going on.
