in editable poly(both modifier and object), the chamfer option is causing crashes consistently. Can be replicated by using the chamfer settings command while selecting an edge that meets a free/open edge of the geometry(See screenshot below).

Thanks @akhil.mathew.arch for reporting the issue.

This happen only with 2023.2 update, we are working on a fix, loading files that have this kind of chamfer can also cause a freeze when loading them in 2023.2. We greatly appreciate all the help we received from the community, like your detail description of what cause the issue, we are very sorry for the trouble it can cause.

how long will take to fix it? i have the same issue can't chamfer anything and its crashing... i just update..

I am pleased to share that an update to 3ds Max, version 2023.2.2, is now available to download through the Autodesk Desktop App (ADA) or through the manage.autodesk.com download portal. This update resolves an issue with Chamfer operations in 3ds Max 2023.2 which resulted in the software entering an endless loop and becoming unresponsive either when loading files (locking up at 73% load) or when applying a Chamfer (through the Chamfer modifier, or Editable Poly or the Edit Poly modifier) to edges that connected to an open edge on your mesh data when using “Limit Effect”.

On behalf of the 3ds Max team I would like to thank everyone who took the time to share their scenes and report this issue to us, your help enabled us to quickly confirm and resolve the issue.

I would also like to take another opportunity to apologize for this issue. We are all as deeply disappointed as you are that this issue shipped with 2023.2, and we hope that with 2023.2.2, and future releases of 3ds Max, will resume the positive trend of releases that provided the stability, features, and functionality that assists you to create expressive content and share creative experiences in your work.

Hello, I have the newest version of 3D Max and this issue is still present. I have to open my file in 3D Max 2022 just to perform a chamfer operation. Can you please tell me if this issue is still being addressed? Thank you in advance.

I'm on 2024 and this is STILL happening - I use Max for about 9 hours a day and I can get it 3 - 4 times daily. It has occurred twice today. It is the bane of my working life and has been for the past couple of years.

The recovery file it produces is just a mess of edges and vertices all over the place. Look at the state of this:

Make sure you have autosave saving regularly!

Thank you for reporting the issue with the vertex chamfer. Would you mind attaching your 3ds Max file or recording a short video illustrating steps to recreate the problem? Which 3ds Max version are you using?
I can't reproduce any issues when chamfering vertices.
