3dsMax 2018 - Revit 2018 interoparability not available?

Has anyone else found that on attempting to Link a Revit 2018 file into 3dsMax 2018 an error message appears saying that Revit interoperability is not installed?

I've searched the installer for something I've missed but can't see anything.

FBX linking works OK and I know Revit linking wasn't brilliant in 2017 versions but you live in hope 🙂

I tested with a sample Revit 2018 file using the Link Revit function in 3ds Max 2018, and cannot seem to reproduce the error. The scene comes in as expected with no message updates.

Could you check to see if the Revit Interoperability component was installed initially with Max 2018 please?

You can do this by checking the Windows Control Panel or the Autodesk Uninstall Tool in Windows by going to Start > All Apps (Win 10) or All Programs (Win 7) > Autodesk > Uninstall Tool.

If this component is missing it may be causing the issue as the linking capability will not be there to interpret the data. If missing, could you please try installing 3ds Max 2018 again and selecting it from the drop-down list?

Many thanks for taking the trouble to look at this.

I did notice that the interoperability for Revit 2018 was not listed, as far as I could see, on the Autodesk Uninstall tool (please see screenshot image attached).

I also looked at reinstalling 3dsMax 2018 but on running the BDSP 2018 installer the configure installation screen (please see attached screenshot) has a tick mark against 3dsMax 2108 and every other application as I just let it do a full install.

OK,

I have uninstalled 3ds Max 2018 using the Uninstall tool and also uninstalled Revit 2018.

Then I reinstalled them both.

Hasn't made any difference - same error message when attempting to link a Revit 2018 file into 3ds Max 2018.

The option to link a Revit file is listed in the 3dsMax2018 menu File->Import->Link Revit but clicking this option and selecting a Revit 2018 file produces the error message (screenshot attached).

FBX linking works OK so I think that it is time to give up on this unless anyone might know why it does not work?

@dominique.bouthillette is on vacation and I'm filling in, I'd like to help with this issue. I've seen a case recently where the installer for Arnold was missing from a Suite installer, so perhaps this installer is somehow missing too. I was able to find it in the 3ds Max unpack folder in the x64 folder. (Autodesk_3ds_Max_2018_EFGJKPS_Win_64bit_dlm/x64/Revit)

Can you check there please? I'm going to go ahead and send you a PM with a web link to the installer as well. Please let me know if it works or not so I can confirm that you're all set. If it does work, please save that installer somewhere as the link has an expiration date. Thanks!

I wanted to follow up here with some instructions on installation. I got a message from you that the installer wouldn't take and although I had tested it on my end, I already had the Revit interop installed. When it's already installed it seems it works ok, but when it isn't the installer doesn't want to run without the master setup files. I uninstalled the Revit interop to test this and I got the same issue you had reported in the PM. So, I have revised instructions for you here, tested on my end and working.

1) Download the 3ds Max installers from the Virtual Agent.

2) Unpack the installers to wherever you'd like by double clicking on the 1st .exe.

3) Run the 3ds Max installer, and choose "Install".

4) Use the drop down list to select the Revit Interop plugin and install it.

Can you please try that for me? Thanks very much!

Many thanks, that has installed Revit 2018 interoperability - and as a bonus I see that the Arnold renderer is also installed which did not come with BDSP 2018 install of 3dsMax (although there may be a newer version of Arnold on its home site).

I had tried to isolate the installer for this but there is a check for the master Max installer before it can run if the interop isn't already installed. (Bummer.) For the reason, the best thing here is to download Max via the Virtual Agent and run the installer. It will see that max is installed but also give you the option to install the interop. Can you please try that for me?

Ok, thank you, the virtual manager approach works.

Previously I had mistaken your reference to the "virtual manager" to mean the "Autodesk Desktop App" on my computer. After clicking the link in your last message I realized my mistake.

Hope the Building Design Suite links are updated when service packs come out. Would like to have a clean set of install files on backup.

I have the same problem; missing interoperability in 3d Max Desing 2018. The link You gave "Virtual Agent" have only Revit 2015! Why?

Please tell me where I can get that missing component, we must get the Revit model into 3D Max.

In the Virtual Agent link go to 'Download Links' - then scroll down to '3dsMax Products' - click on that - then click '3dsMax' and you will see 2018 download in 2 files.

I've just checked and it works for me.

Here is the link for the Virtual Agent. It may dynamically generate these links so I don't know for sure links work like that but I'll try. Part1 ,Part2 ,Part3

If you use the Virtual Agent you should choose these options once in the Virtual Agent: Download Links -> Revit Products -> Revit.
When I do that I have links for 2015-2018. Can you please try that for me? Thanks!

I downloaded 3DS Max 2018 via virtual agent and installed the software by clicking the Part I. Looks like the installation finished without needing to click Part II.

Can you confirm whether I need to click Part II at all?

You don't need to physically click part 2, but part 2 just needs to be in the same place as part 1. Part 1 will automatically see Part 2. Does that make sense?
