Hi,

a .avi or .mov is not a 3d container, but a 2d movie container.

So what you want to do is called a Render; rendering your 3d animation to a 2d movie.

Do do so, in Max main menu > Rendering > Render Setup... (or press F10 key)

You'll get the rendering setup UI in witch you can choose the Render Output, you'll be able to choose .avi or .mov or any of many formats.

You can find more information on how to set things up for rendering in :

Hi,

I've tried several ways but just have not figured out how to export my 3ds Max 2017 animation creation to either an .avi or .mov file. It's just not shown as an option in the export. Not sure why a lot of this has to be so difficult?

Hopefully one of you wonderful experts here can help me out. My assignment is actually due tomorrow but I'm thinking maybe there's something simple that I'm just not seeing? Hopefully. Will check back tomorrow before turning in the assignment.

Thanks so much for any help you can provide

Sincerely,

Crystal Kaulbars

ha! great to know Crystal! 🙂

for shadows, as you did, you need the light to emit shadow, but you also need to make sure that the objects can make and receive shadows, by default that should be On.

To verify or set it, right-click on your objects > Object Properties > General, in the Rendering Control part, make sure that Cast Shadows and Receive Shadows are On.

There is also another option for that to verify, in the Render Setup window > Renderer tab, Options > Shadows, should be set to On, should be On by default.

That should give you shadows.

There are other options in the Light for Shadows that may alter it.

Thank you so much, Jean-Thierry Roy (ads_royje),

I'll do that for the shadows.

I got the .mov exported, thanks to your help, but can you look at my attached project and let me know why my sound isn't playing with the .mov? I wanted it to play in the background while the ball bounces. This isn't completely finished because I want to create more bounces and get the shadows in there.

Really appreciate your help in this JT.

Sincerely,

Crystal

My pleasure! 🙂

I tried to understand as to why the .mov would not get the audio ... didn't get it to work but it should. This seems to be a bug with the .mov.

I did get it to work with .avi.

You could use .avi

Sorry for the issue 😕

Good morning, Jean-Thierry Roy (ads_royje),

Thank you for looking at that but my professor let me know that the sound won't work in Quicktime .mov because my Windows 10 PC is 64-bit and Quicktime is 32-bit, so it's that incompatibility that doesn't allow for the crossover of sound to the .mov but does allow for it in the .avi version.

I'm no tech expert, so I don't know what that all means, but I'll just be using only .avi from now on since they're accepting it at school, probably for the same reason.

I was going to attach the end project, but the sys here won't allow it. I'm just a newb so the ball didn't bounce around as good as I wanted to the copyright free music, but moving on to learning the physics of animated objects falling downstairs and hoping to get better movement from them than I did with my ball bounce.

My prof mentioned that I was working my key framing in 10's but should be working them in 5's to speed up the process but not lose the integrity of the SFX / music.

This is my first foray into animating my 3ds Max renders and I have to thank you SO much Jean-Thierry!! If you hadn't helped me I'd still be wondering how to export into a video viewing format!

Thanks again, and I hope you have a terrific weekend!

Sincerely,

Crystal Kaulbars

haa! Thank you for sharing the quicktime vs sounds information back! 🙂

I think this is worth logging an issue to our system, if your teacher would like to do so! So we can look at it! 🙂

If ever you do need to, there are a few tools out there to convert .avi to .mp4 (similar to .mov) namely one I like and use a lot called "handbrake", it is a freeware.

It is a hard thing to sync animation and music! You've set the bar quite high there!! 🙂

But it is a great way to learn! 🙂

It is my pleasure Crystal! This is a wonderful story to read! 🙂

I wish you too a great exiting weekend, and most of all, a wonderful career in 3d animation! 🙂

Best tips I can give you, observe everything that moves, keep your eyes opened, watch cartoons (its fun too!) , never 'think' you know, always observe!

All my best wishes! 🙂
