Can't Edit Envelopes or Weight

I'm running 3DS Max 2010 on Windows 7 and for some reason I'm unable to edit the envelopes or bone weight for my rig. I've looked at several tutorials and, unlike everything I've seen, I don't get the red capsule outline to adjust envelope size, but rather just a big red mark on the skin of my model that can't be changed in any way. The weight tool has no effect on shrinking or enlarging this area. I can use the Paint Weight option, but only to add weight to other parts of the model, not affect the primary area.

I tried upgrading to 2015 and this only complicated the matter as I still had the envelope problem as well as the inability to see textures.

Hopefully someone can help me here. I'd love to do some of my own rigs, but at this rate it seems as though the program is simply incompatible with my computer.

just to be sure, do you get an error like "coCreateInstance failed" ?

This is a known issue that affects Skin modifier.

The symptoms your describing does align with the above.

I do hope this can solve your problem.

If not, would it be possible to attach the problematic scene so we can investigate the problem ?

I would really like for you to get forward with rigging and skinning!

I've had no such message, I'm afraid. When I installed 2015, I did get an occasional error message with 2010 about not running it as the administrator or something along those lines, but after uninstalling 2015 and reinstalling 2010, everything runs exactly as it did before. I'd be happy to include the scene... once I know what you mean by that. Haha!

Do you mean posting the file itself or just a screenshot?

that is what I was hoping for!!! Thank you!

I don't have Max 2010 anymore as we don't support it 😕 My oldest Max is 2013.

So I've opened the file in 2013 and looked at it's content.

On my side, it looks right. But I think that what you see is the the Envelopes are very very small

I've attached a video of what I got. Let me know if that matches what you have on your side!
