Good afternoon,

I wanted to see if anyone had a clever way of doing what Mastercam would refer to as dynamic milling for facing. They have an excellent toolpath which starts at the outside of the stock and spirals in. Saves a lot of time and is great on the tools. I use spiral surface milling for this at times, but there is no way to control the tool radius that I am aware of. What you get is a lot of sharp corners. If you do high feed and light step overs on a Hardinge mill like I am using, you get a bunch of jerky movements. Definitely not good for the tool. I have attached a picture to show what I get, The arcs on the outside are what would be preferred, but as you see it turns to sharp corners as you get closer to the center. The milling tab has a toolpath corner % option, but if you go into help it says it is only for Z level surface milling. Would be great to have this option for spiral. I'd appreciate suggestions. Thanks.

yes they do.

Go to add ins and activate UDF_spiral_face

Then to use it, you have to go to

new feature, from feature, user, and it will be called Spiral_Face.

I'm not sure why they couldn't just put it in Facing- would have bee a little easier to use.

That worked well, thanks. I wish everyone would do a better job at getting such things out to people. I check add ins every now and again, but some of them you would not know what to do with unless someone explained it.

The spiral face is nice except for that little up/down bow tie swirl it does at the end of a rectangle face. What the heck is that? I guess it would be fine going slow with a big face mill, but I do most of my facing with smaller end mills going at high feeds. That little shift causes quite an unnecessary chirp. Anyway, thanks.

FYI. Draw a curve exactly where you want to guide the tool. Make a side feature .001 deep (in case you forget to change it to 0.0 later...) and adjust your leads etc. to get it to face where you want specifically.

Cheers,

Thomas

Note to the support guys:

Would it be possible to separate out the add-in .bas files and somehow package them in a single file for download?

They used to be available as individual downloadables from the old FC site with descriptions.
