tema Haas UMC750 cutting side feature profile by rotating C axis en FeatureCAM Forum

We have a Haas UMC750 and need to profile around a larger rectangular part where we can only get around the part by rotating the C axis and moving X back and forth, and keeping the Y axis at zero. Something like polar milling or cylindrical milling comes to mind, want to do it with a side feature. Any ideas how to do this in Featurecam?

The attached file has a curve with a small gap at the left end to control the start location, the small gap will not create a problem on the finished part.

Jeff

It can be done - i've done it.

I had a 3 axis VMC with a 4th axis (standard setup - around X)

I turned the axis on it's ass - had the chuck vertical - had the axis rotate around Z

Had the Y locked and everything done via polar co ords because part was out of machine limits in Y

(Machined everything CCW to avoid b/lash)

I was machining 18" dia parts with a Y axis of 14"

Needed a custom post though (got one, but it's Siemens 810).

I had the boys at Indiecam (UK) sort me out a post. Stuart at indiecam is the best post writer i've ever met, no nepotism.

I'm aware that vertical turn/mill will allow you to 4th axis rotary as a 3D finish option, but it will set the tool perpendicular to the surface - pointless for your application.

I guess i'm confirming it's a custom post you need.

That said, if anybody can sort J's problem by features alone................speak up!

M.

Hi,

If you have your part along Y-axis can you then make it?

Thank you,

Thanks but the part is wider and longer than the Y axis travel so the only way to mill around the profile is to rotate the C axis. Surface mill will rotate C only if the cutter is at an angle other than 90° to the table. In this case we want the cutter to be square with the table and spin the C axis to go around the part. Was thinking about putting a very small angle and using surface milling and that would force it to rotate C, but was hoping for a 'proper' solution.

Would prefer to use a side mill operation but the options for 5 axis settings don't keep the cutter in one place and let the part spin. It has orientation angle but that still locks the C axis at a specific angle and the cutter still drives around the part. We do this type of milling on our mill-turn machine but can't figure out how on the Haas UMC750.

Thanks again,

This video will tell you how to setup you post and indexing to do what you need.

You will also need to set your travel limits in your .MD file for the X and Y head travel.

The only problem is, it will start and run the tool somewhere on the Y 0.00 and X+ side of the rotary table. This is not compatible with the HAAS UMC 750, where the tool most run in the X - side of the rotary in order to take advantage of this feature.

The UMC 750 has 30 inches of X travel, about 20.5 " is on the left ( or X minus) of the C rotary and only 9.5" on the right side ( X plus). That being said, you should be able to machine a part nearly 28 " long on the table, and a parts over 36" long that are elevated 4-1/2" off (clearing the B rotary end support) the table .

I've tried everything I can think of to keep the tool from running into the X+ travel limits. Hope FC can fix this soon, or someone tells me what I'm missing in the settings.

Russ F.
