Remake moving to ReCap Photo - Question on loss of functionality

I have a current ReMake subscription as well as the Product Design Subscription giving me ReCap Pro and now ReCap Photo.

ReCap Photo does not allow me to create my models locally on my workstation like ReMake does. Why was this removed?

ReCap Photo does not allow you to validate your photo selection, ReMake allowed this allowing you to clean out problem photos before creating models. Again why is this removed.

There are also no options to run low or high detail versions, Remake allowed me to run a faster low detail assembly to verify and then run a high detail finish version when I was satisfied.

I was already using the Beta feature in Remake and using 750-1000 pictures without issue, I wonder how many credits that is going to cost me?

Were these changes made to keep a steady stream of credit charges coming in because it seams that the credits required are based on how many pictures are uploaded.

I am sorry, I just do not understand this move, can you please explain if I am just missing something or is this anything other than another cash grab.

I gave it a run on a small project, can't post screen shot of project due to NDA but the model is horrible compared to the ReMake package and it took an hour longer. So I try to go back to ReMake and it is uninstalled from my system and can't be re-installed with ReCap Photo. So know I have to uninstall this software so I can go back and complete my projects.

From what I can find this is not a Desktop software any longer.

Hi,

For largely technical (and a bit of business) reasons, we had to drop local reconstruction feature. And along with local reconstruction, validation functionality got removed too. I will add validation as a wishlist item for the future updates.

With respect to quality, you should get exactly same results as you were getting in ReMake. If you are not then we would like to investigate and fix it for you. Let me know if we should talk - send me a PM with contact details.

These 'technical reasons' did not prevent ReMake having the local processing option so I am assuming that this feature conflicts with the enhancements that were made to support up to 1000 photos. I have suggested in relation to the above-linked recap idea request on the Recap ideas forum that ReMake simply be made available again for those who want to continue using the local processing feature and do not need the new 1000 photos capability. I have made the same suggestion in relation to this request for a Startup/Hobbyist license for Recap (if I recall correctly such licensing was available for ReMake, please correct me if I am wrong).

I have just today managed to get ReMake to launch (after it refusing to launch without an update) and created a personal Autodesk account in the hope of using it as a hobbyist (the one I am using to post this message is tied to a business e-mail address and would therefore not be entitled to hobbyist licensing). However, I now cannot see how to sign-up for a hobbyist ReMake license with that account.

In other words, if there are things the new Recap Photo cannot do for various reasons, why can't we continue to have access to ReMake as well?

From 250 to 1000 was not a technical limitation for local processing. It is in the current version of ReMake, though noted as a Beta feature. It works without issue in my experience with it and I have used it with around 30 or so projects. I do not see Autodesk reverting their plan on Remake and it's transition to 100% cloud base with ReCap Pro and Recap Photo. Their intended audience is based on drone and large site development for architectural and construction purposes. Going to the Cloud reduces their development resources needed since they working with a smaller list of hardware components that they have to create code to work with, thereby streamlining what work they need to do for this market.

I am not sure about the Free to use version but I think it will stop working sometime in Nov or Dec, I would have to look that up. I have been told that my subscription would work to the end of my plans date which is May 2018, will see if they goes as planned when they pull the plug on the other version. There are other alternatives out there if you want to keep the hobbyist side for your personal use, a couple quick searches would put you were you need to be.

That makes sense for the new software, but my point is that they already have the code for doing local computation with ReMake. They should not need to create new code, just let us use the existing ReMake as long as we like. Oh, and let people like me who discovered ReMake too late to obtain a license (I had assumed it was cloud-only and literally only found out it had a local computation feature in the week Recap Photo replaced it, perhaps even on the day) obtain licenses for it. I eagerly downloaded the new Recap Photo expecting it to have the feature I had just learned about, only to discover the feature was missing.

Dear Autodesk,

we have PAYED YOU for a ONE YEAR USAGE of ReMake, where we have used up now 3 month. Would you honestly tell us, that we can't run Remake anymore when our Workstation is rebooting or closing ReMake by mistake?

Give us an option to continue local with ReMake.

We are modelling ~300 scans from people a day and are for sure not willed to do this in the cloud!!! By the way - the cloudservice (also recap photo) IS NOT working with our photos!!

I am sorry, but this behaviour is unacceptable!

This is only a short-term fix for businesses who require the local computation feature, if I understand correctly they will be unable to continue doing local computations once their subscription expires. That is not good enough in my opinion; if you cannot integrate the local computation into ReCap Photo why do you not continue to sell ReMake for local computation? And the hobbyist offering formerly provided for ReMake (if I recall correctly) is no longer available, leaving hobbyists with fewer options than previously.
