the lathe CAM on fusion seems to be hit or miss. sometimes it picks up geometry and works great, other times it won't create toolpaths at all. sometimes it says no contour, or nothing to machine, or just failure to create toolpath. is ther a way i can just draw a sketch and use that, instead of a solid?

No you have to use a solid. Can you upload some file you're having trouble with, have you tried enabling spun profile in the setup.

Mark

Edit make sure you export a f3d file with your setup and ops.
