Close, but I did not make myself clear. This is a deep cut and even though I have a 4" end mill, I run out of flute about 2/3 of the way down. See the screen shots below. The tool path needs to clear out stock on the waste side of the cut to keep the shank from rubbing. Will follow up with a ball nose spiral tool path to remove any steps.

Struggling with a 2d contour path with taper on the back side of a flipped part as shown below. A standard 2d contour tool path causes by end mill to rub on the side of the stock as it nears the bottom of the stock and gets past the flutes.

I tried using the taper option, but the simulation shows that it will mutilate my part. I tried projecting the curve to the bottom of the part, but that didn't work either.

What am I doing wrong, or is this the incorrect approach? I have also tried 3D adaptive clearing to do this cut, but it takes forever!

Thanks,

Tom

If you like to contour this you can also try 3D Contour.

There are a few options 3D contour and ramp will work nicely cutting to just short of the bottom then coming back with a 2D contour to finish so you still have tabs, or not.

You can use the heights to control where the toolpath stops and starts if you wont to go with the option of finishing with a 2D contour.

You will need to use a ball noise end mill to get a good clean surfaces a flat end mill will leave ridges.

Example attached

Just in case you want to know how to get the 2d tapered contour to work see the attached file. One problem you had was the model had a 5° taper but you set 15° in the contour op! To get a reliable toolpath with the taper option I've found you need to use "From Selected Contour" for the top and bottom height. I've selected the contour at the bottom of the model and set the top height to selected contour +1.5 and bottom to -.005.

I was only showing how to use the taper option and left the pocketing\clearing to you. Here's a file with a couple of ideas, one just using 2d contour the other a 2d pocket and finish with a contour. If you want more options you'll need to make a 3d model and use 3d ops. One warning, I increased the length of your cutter.
