Engraving Text (hacking it using an SVG)

As far as I know engraving text, a "simple" feature is not yet available(please correct me in wrong). So as a hack, I tried importing an SVG of the text I want. See attached "S". This kind of works but when it comes to the CAM (using Trace) I have to hand select every tiny little segment of every letter. In this case the S alone has about 15 segments. I believe because of this, the generated toolpath keeps retracting (keep down is on). Obviously all I want it a single line toolpath. Help is appreciated thanks.

I can't give you much in the way of help, just wanted to chime in on the lack of engraving in F360.

I think it's kinda silly, don't you? I mean, lets (fusion team) get all hot and bothered about 4-5 axis, but let's not even mention anything to anyone about something as basic as single font engraving. I wonder if this product is going to end up nothing more than a bunch of 80% finished features contantly causing frustration

yup they need to do something about joining imported curves and how you select curves for 2d milling .

My guess is there are small gaps in the imported sketch. In the model work space edit the sketch and try zooming in, if you can see a gap use a coincident constrain to join the 2 line. Another option is to use fillet with a small rad, unfortunately Fusion doesn't let you use 0 in fillet to join ends.

Can you upload the SVG file.

Mark

I just got it to import a "S" from rhino dwg file set to 2004 natural and other settings would give me secments and not one curve . so it is a problem with the exporting of the file and not a problem in fusion . but seeing some tools for fixing curves would be nice .

Tony

I figured this out. Select the first curve in the profile then double click on the selected curve and a menu will appear, now when you select the end of the profile all the curves in the chain will select.

Click on the green + then the OK in trace and the tool path for the profile will generate.

Mark

Mark,

Slight correction. No need for double click, single click on the same segment that you have selected previously should bring you in edit mode.

Summary: for open loop selection, first click selects the first egment, second click on the same segment initiates the edit capability, third click on a different segment indicates the end segment of the loop. Any additional clicks in between start and end segment will help decide what path to follow if multiple solutions are possible.

Cheers

+1 Some simple operations in the CAM feels unnecessary complex.

Things like this leads me back to my previous CAM software (cambam)

Were a typical 2D operation goes like this:

* Draw the 2d shapes / and or Text

* Select the shapes

* Click on the engrave operation

* Select Feedrate, plunge speed, tool diameter, target depth and depth per pass.

* All done

3 reasons for posting to a 2 year old thread.

1/ In the current version of 360 there appears to be no way to select all items on a curve for engraving or tracing. What has been previously discussed no longer appears to function.

2/ The ability to perform engraving was being looked into 2 years ago has there been any progress and when could we expect to see an update to include this capability.

3/ What options exist for performing engraving/v carve on a single line font?

If you do it as a dxf it maybe ok there are problems with some programs .dxf and .svg file output (there are to many different dxf and svg types out there) there seems to be less problems with .dxf.

.dxf's are getting worked on now there will be improvement to them soon (when I don't know).
