Hello,

I was looking for ideas , on how to manufacture Custom Threads using Fusion 360 CAM ? , I know there is not direct option in Fusion 360 to manufacture a custom thread profile and get NC Code , so I just wanted to know if there is any workaround ? , Has someone tried this ?

What do you mean by Custom Threads? If it's a constant pitch, Fusion doesn't care if you're doing an Acme, Buttress, 60 deg, spherical, whatever. Simulation won't be correct, but the code will be.

But it is a very big thread , I intend to manufacture it using Standard Parting / Grooving Insert. So a lot of passes will be required and those passes might not start from the same Z Point. If interpolate would be a correct word ? I intend to make that thread profile with a different insert profile.

If you still don't know what custom thread is check out this link Mastercam Custom Thread ,

Thanks ,

Bhavar Kumavat

SprutCAM which calls itself Mid Level Software has these options which are I believe very common in Plastics Die and Mold Industry (they have a lot of custom threads for bottles) , and here is fusion which calls itself a High Level full blown CAD/CAM package lacks these options. I love fusion 360 absolutely. But I come from Mastercam where there are so many strategies and one can easily find use of each strategy to get the toolpath one wants. In fusion I noticed a very small dialog box of strategy not saying they are inefficient. But often it gives the toolpath it wants rather then the toolpath I want

We refer to what you're asking as Polyline threading.
Constant lead threading which the lead and shape can change mid way with G32 style threading.

There are plans to rebuild the functionality for our turning thread toolpaths and supporting this type of threading is one of the top of the list items.

I would really use that functionality when it comes , but right now since it is not , I am thinking how could I do it , I have heard of Post Processors who support that.

Do you have any idea on that ?

Inside my Head , I think of it as my Tools X and Z Location need to be put inside a G32 Block ? Is that the right approach ? , Let me know if you have inputs on this , alternatively if you have code or implementation details , let me know.

I will try to modify my own post , to see if that idea would work , if it works will share a generic version of it here with others.

Thanks ,

Bhavar Kumavat

Yes, you can program a G32 style thread canned cycle that can follow any path.

It does require you to input every line of the thread cycle, if you were going to do 3 passes it would look like this.

Position the depth of cut in X, then G32 ### start passes ###

Sorry on the late reply, unfortunately no time soon.
It's on our list of priorities but we have not started actively developing a solution for it. We are actively working on the grooving strategies and converting them to the new turning algorithm that is being use in Profile Roughing/Finishing. That is taking up a bulk of our effort and simultaneously working on fixing a large portion of turning tools requirements. Addressing/Enhancing the Threading requirements will take place after that.

As a reference, FeatureCAM was built in the 1980's and didn't receive the ability to go polyline threading until 2016-2017. It is something we will deliver before that 36 year gap that FeatureCAM had.
