I think the same answer would apply to this question as well, maybe this will make the question more clear.. I want to engrave this logo on a part. But I dont want to engrave the outline, I want to remove the mateial inside the letters, say 0.010in deep. When I select 2d pocket it wants to machine around the entire part, leaving the area selected untouched, but what I'm looking for is to simply cut out the letters compleatly as opposed to an outline.

I'm trying to engrave this pattern. Using the trace op, I will have to set toolpaths to trace the outline of some of the pattern, the circles connecting the shapes, but the shapes themselves I need to cut the inside of the shape to have it look like the picture. I can use trace to trace the circles, but I dont know how to get the inside of the shape, the cross, to be cut. I've tried 2d pocket, to machine a pocket inside the cross, but thats not gonna work.

Thanks everyone, I appreciate the help.

From what you said what you’re wanting to do is 2D pocketing. Trying to do it from your sketch will be next to imposable. What I would recommend is to create a “plate” and then create some extrudes to pocket out. You won’t have to do them all I would do the first two rows and then use pattern to do the rest.
