I was just wondering if something like this is possible.

I have this model and the front of it has a slope/bank that tapers down. I have successfully applied a 3D contour that is bound to just the bank, although because the tool is machining straight down, the bank is choppy and almost looks like a stairset.

Is there a way to use tool orientation to angle the tool so it can sweep across the bank and cut with the tip of the tool?

( we have a 5 axis machine, although we have not done much past 3 axis operations to date )

Thanks for your time!

Mike

If your machine can do it then it is possible.

Edit,

This just shows tool orientation but trace may not be correct strategy to drive machine and accomplish it.

Maybe multi-axis contour is better option.

A couple simple solutions (without changing tool orientation!):

- Contour profile finishing pass with very small step-down (ball end preferably)

- Change the pass angle by 90 degrees, essentially making short vertical passes instead of long contours (more accommodating of a flat end bit, ball end still preferable)

A large ball end is your friend when finishing large curved surfaces. The larger the radius the better: the bigger the circle, the less curved the contact point will be, requiring fewer passes to accomplish desired resolution.

This is the same effect you get when running a flat end orthogonal to the contour (since edge profile becomes more circular).

I can mock up some examples of each, if you feel that would be helpful (:

Thanks for getting back to me!

I could easily set up an operation like that although I was looking to change the tool orientation.

I will still test out the method you suggested
