This idea of AutoCAD terminating perpetually licenses is nothing more than greed, fleecing the consumer perpetually. AutoCAD was not happy with coming out with a newer version every year, claiming that this is the ultimate. Reality is that there is very little added features from one year to another, features that very few draftsmen or designer use on a daily bases. As matter of fact many companies are still using CAD versions 4 ,6 even 10 years old and doing quite well, and have no intentions in purchasing a newer version.

Still producing DWGs with all the information necessary to build a building anywhere in the world.

A software should be able to be bought and that's it, the consumer or purchaser will do with it as he sees fit. The ending of perpetually licenses favors more "The Corporations" AutoCAD is a corporation. They figured out a way to generate a revenue in a very mislay way, charging a monthly fee for returning customers It is just like big government wanting to know everything you do and when you do it. Excessive control.

Take an example: When you buy or lease a car does the dealership want to known where you drive your car or when you drive your car? NO

Do you have to call in and tell them I need to use my car 4 hours a day or I will travel cross country the next two weeks. NO absolutely not.

The same thing with any computer program or software. This direction will only open up the doors to break the program code and create pirate programs, which there are thousands out there and many firms work with these programs with no problems whats so ever.

If someone is using an old version and paid for a "perpetual" license, that version won't stop working G (as long as the OS) supports that version.

Autodesk just isn't going to continue selling NEW licenses under that license model.

To use your own analogy, can a car maker decide to no longer sell cars but to lease them instead? Sure they could. The only question is whether or not it's a good business decision to do so.

Let me preface this reply with the fact that I subscribe to your feelings regarding perpetual license. the matter I want to take up is with your statement "......A software should be able to be bought and that's it, the consumer or purchaser will do with it as he sees fit....."

"......Autodesk and its licensors retain title to and ownership of, and all other rights with respect to, the Autodesk Materials and all copies thereof, including, without limitation, any related copyrights, trademarks, trade secrets, patents, and other intellectual property rights. Licensee has only the limited licenses granted with respect to the Licensed Materials expressly set forth in this Agreement, and Licensee has no other rights, implied or otherwise....."

It is my understanding, that no matter the title of the process to gain use of an Autodesk product, be it PURCHASED by way of perpetual license, or subscription based access or by way of Network License, the user never OWNS the software, or "Autodesk Materials"(A.M.). One is granted permission to utilize the A.M. via the fore mentioned routes by way of LICENSING the materials to that person. That applies to perpetual license also, which the birthing of will cease here shortly. Purchasing A.M. does not afford the user the outright claim of OWNERSHIP, where one may see themselves purchasing the material and then retreating to ones bubble in life with the materials to do with as they please. As noted above, no matter how you LEGALLY access use of A.M. only a LIMITED LICENSE IS GRANTED for it's use contingent on the due diligence of the user in "..........continuous compliance with this Agreement and payment of the applicable fees, Autodesk grants Licensee a nonexclusive, nonsublicensable, nontransferable, limited license to Install and Access the Licensed Materials,....." See Section 1, part 1.1 License Grant

Moreover, if you take time to ascertain the pulse of industry, you will discover that companies such as Autodesk, are trending towards the "subscription" business model also. (eg Solidworks)

I digress.

I was compelled to engage you because I could feel in your words the same feelings I had towards purchasing an Autodesk Product. And with the subscription mode it felt open, loose and insecure. I felt that with a perpetual license, there were no loose ends, end of story. Almost as if you had it in your hands. it was tangible. you could feel it. see it. and it involved one process. Buy it. Now I feel like I dont know where the software is actually at and that it has an endless premium for it's use and it has the feel of going from a hard disk copy (perpetual) to floating aimlessly amidst "the cloud".

I thought it would make sense to retain perpetual licensing for the user to upgrade when it seemed fitting. Justified by the USER. I understand the trend and where all this is going, and I can tell you it's bigger plan than MOST of companies utilizing, say AutoCAD. Pay as you go is global thinking, cloud based interaction, and where the 3d "MODEL" is now the "DATABASE". Wherein conception layout has inclusion fo the work process all the way to the deliverable. I think it falls under the guise of "phone app" styling and interfacing where this is linked to this linked to this linked back to this...etc" which runs parrallel to the global trend of the information highway, per-se. I envision a day when you will have ads popping up in your software as you use it. Anyway, my point is I have an appreciation for ingenuity of Autodesk where they seek to simulate the latest trends in information use and control, we saw it with mechanical desktop (??). wherein autocad users were drawn towards the features of Mechanical only to find it was a stepping stone to the INVENTOR mentality. and I understand it and accept it. but that appeals to the minority of businesses using, say Autocad. I feel that the majority of businsses that use AutoCAD, dont have the support structure behind them, the understanding from the upper food chain or even the WANT to understand. they are in business of one sort or another, the order comes in and unless youre a company that the drawings ARE the deliverable, then the autocad user is a NECESSARY EVIL. Unless you somehow get "buy in" to the software from upper mgt and how it can cut cost and the reusiblility of graphics, typically upper management has tunnel vision when it comes to autocad and it's needs and unfortunately its problems. they dont want to hear it, they dont understand it ........they just want a drawing. Sounds crude but I've witnessed it for over 35 years. Pay as you go? sure.....but what about the rest of us that hardly have a block library established. where getting the job to the shop outweighs text size, scale, dimscale, tblock ANYDAY. I dont like it, but it is what it is.

I dont have all this down to a science....but on another note.....the ratio between the claims made of the software by Autodesk and the price paid for software, justified by the claims, are skewed and off center. Autodesk is not where they think they are, and most notably where they CLAIM to be at, in the land of seamless, user friendly, miraculous software.

anyway.....my 2 cents.

Hello Guys, OP here... So after a really thoughtful "meditation" I came to following conclusion... Before I start I must highlight, that I thought Autodesk was a very secretive and occlusive company. I was very worried about my future. Surprisingly, I found out that Autodesk is non of these listed things above. In fact, I think this company deserves trust. I know the pricing on some product needs tweaking and such but my point is, trust that company. They care about their costumers. I learned it and I would trust my everything to it. I have never seen or contacted a company quite as transparent as autodesk. Give them a chance! Goodbye

I do not feel like they are a bad company but I totally disagree with only
having one license model. For me that is very unfair and feels like I going
to be cheated. I understand it's all about business but why close your doors
to certain customers?

Of course larger corporations this will be no problem but what about the
smaller business and the indie developers/designers. In my honest opinion
if Autodesk was to be smart and fair their license model would look more
like this

Purchasing options:

1. Perpetual Licenses $ xxxxxx "renew after major update or keep
as is forever"

2. Subscription Plans $ xxxxxx "Pay monthly, bi-yearly or yearly
always get the latest and greatest"

3. Rent to own $ xxxxxx "Cost of product divided over
so many months + small interest fee until Perpetual license is paid"

Now that would be fair and I would continue to stay an Autodesk customer for
many years!

A yes the ship has took sail.......but high seas are filled with pirates, pirates that can and will crack the code.

Autodesk programs will be available at a fraction of the price.

No customer should have to beg a company to satisfy their needs, It should
be part of the business model.

For those who you can't satisfy piracy is not an option there are many other
alternatives

* Archicad, Sketchbook, Vectorworks, etc

* Blender, Cinema 4D, Vue, ect

I am done asking this company to work with me, I have moved on!

Yes, many other alternatives! Do your research. It will be worth it.

In preparation of getting away from the FORCED subscription model by AutoDesk, I switch to Manga Studio. I LOVE IT!!! Much more powerful and the inks are incredible!

we started using draftsight , a great alternative to high cost auto-cad-rental

My Dad loves it too: he is semi-retired and prefers the free solution there.
I use it to open corrupt DWG files that AutoCAD won't.

for what i currently need for 2d cad, Draftsight is more then good enough, the FREE version is on par with Autocad, and I have already made several drawings without any issues,

yes, as an autocad user customer for 20+ years it's unfortunate that i am leaving autodesk becuase of subscription RENTAL based licensing , but I cannot and will Not support this. no mater how much I try to come to terms with It, I will NEVER do it,

The only way to get their attention is to dump autodesk and select Dassault (Solidworks, Catia, etc.)

This subscription crap (renting the software) just is the new trend. There is no value for the customer, just lining the pockets

of the company.
