decoiled straight & cut joints not separating

How do I setup the database so that decoiled straight & short joints are separated? I tried to simply my database, but over simplified it, now I don't know how to get the straight ducts to report correctly, & I have done way too much work on it to go backwards. Can anyone point me to an article that will explain how to do this?
