The material name alone does not suffice and prevents the organization of materials. You can not use complex names if you plan to use them in schedules.

Give us access to more material parameters in Quantity schedules.

In regular schedules (as opposed to material take off schedules) we can only schedule the material name.

For instance in a door schedule we would like to be able to show the different materials assigned to the door. Now we can only show the material names. It would be great if we could access the mark (and preferably description) of the materials as well.

Material Marks/Keynotes in Schedules

I would like to be able to add a material parameter to a family BUT it allows the parameter to be filled in with the material MARK or KEYNOTE value in lieu of the material NAME. This would then allow us to schedule this in regular schedules seeing codes instead of names!

For Example: At the moment in door schedules, when scheduling the material parameter, you can only see the name. Therefore, you need to make the material name, match the mark/keynote value causing duplication and coordination issues. This could then be applied to ANY schedule of a family picking up materials or finishes by code rather than by name.

Schedule Material Mark in lieu of Material Name

I would like to be able to select a material for a component (such as a door) and tell Revit to display the MARK value of that selected material in schedules instead of the material name.

Currently in door schedules (or similar) we want to schedule the finishes to the door panel, frame etc. We want to see codes for those finishes, but currently we can only see the material name meaning our material names have to be codes eg:P01 (the same code is written in Mark parameter of the material).

So we get manual duplication and coordination of material names and mark values or we settle for office naming conventions seen in the schedule or we use text parameters that aren't linked to the material. Not great choices.

Wouldn't this be nice?

p.s. I have previously discussed using a material take-off schedule to tackle this problem, but it doesn't work

See... https://forums.autodesk.com/t5/revit-architecture-forum/material-take-off-schedule-in-place-of-a-door-schedule/m-p/5622649#M91754

Ok. Well I am officially surprised. I would have thought this would be a really popular request considering how often people complain about it and "wish" for it.

I just got notification my version of the same idea just got merged with this one (not surprised I didn't find it before posting, looking at the date, it would have been on page 50 something when I did my search)

Considering combined, we have only 7 votes (at the time of writing) this isn't going anywhere fast. A similar idea i posted back in August last year also didn't gain much traction and has since been archived.

So, I wonder if this was marked as 'under review' and put into the short pile of ideas, if it would gain more traction?

Or maybe I am just mistaken about how much better it would be to have this ability.

insert sad face.

I think it's a really important schedule feature that they should add. I suspect it's a request that is written in several different ways, and that people have different ideas of how to title/do, making it harder to find and attract support. Here's the one I did: Allow "Field Format" to provide access to other parameters. I was looking to be able to control how nested families appeared in the schedule too.

Archived back in March 2017 for lack of votes! Surely there is enough votes now to give this idea more consideration.

This would be a great addition for Schedules. My example is also for Doors. Although the Material is Hollow Metal Frame, I would just like to show the 'Mark' value which is 'HM'. This would significantly tidy up the Schedule.

Voted for the original idea, thanks for posting.

While we're waiting for improvements, a short story:

To work around this issue, I tried to make a door schedule as a material takeoff. We're using long material names to make materials recognizable (Category, material, colour, shininess etc.) but only need to report colour codes (RAL, NCS, Veneer type as a code) in door schedules. Created a custom material parameter ("Värikoodi" for colour code) to hold the colour code as Text.

The material takeoff in a project then schedules, judging by door number ("Oven numero" in the Material takeoff/door schedule), individual bits of geometry (?) in door instances and their nested families, whose geometry's material is linked to the door's material parameter. Curiously, some scheduled items display the custom material parameter value ("Värikoodi"), some don't. I suspect the ones not showing a value at all are bits of geometry in nested families of the host door family, but I could be wrong. All door geometry linked to the material parameter ("Oven väri" for door colour) is in nested families of the host door family. I added a 1mx1mx1m cube into the host to see what happens, but the schedule now reports a volume of 1.162m3, whatever that represents! These items, however, show the correct colour code.

If only there was a way filter out the unnecessary lines in the schedule... Could use 1mx1mx1m (or larger) cube to filter by volume. Doors hardly ever have components of such volume, but with the way volumes are treated by Revit, it now feels like gamble. In addition, there's the trouble of extra geometry in door families and having to turn them off in all view templates/vg overrides.

So, as far I can see there's no really reliable workaround here. Any thoughts?

Attached screenshots of the Material takeoff/ door schedule before and after filtering (I added the "filtering cube" to only one family). Normally, we wouldn't of course display the material volume nor the door material column ("Oven_väri"), just the colour code ("Värikoodi").

Thanks for reading!

Just ran into this and can see its potential as huge for making schedules listing materials way more user friendly. i think a lot of people take the manual text parameter route when listing materials because the mat. browser and its organization is cumbersome already. giving people a good reason to use that information may drive further ideas on making materials more robust. especially if the parameters are already there just let us schedule them in a quantity schedule.

Yes. This is all upside down in schedules.

We should be able to pull any material field - just like any room field.

Right now the only way to really make things work with materials is to put mark in the name field and then put the name in the mark field. Really just silly.

This is how I want my names to be listed out. CSI for all materials. (Very Pretty) But that doesn't really work for schedules, does it?

Or you do what I have to do now. Write code to pull the material out. Find its mark and insert the value into a dummy field on the schedule. Fake and manual process.
