It would be great to be able to have the roof overhang be a separate thickness (or even structure).

Typically, even if I'm using bigger rafters for a roof (e.g. 2x12), the soffit/overhang is 2x4 or 2x6 max.

I know of the fascia settings (which have their own limitations) and have worked around it other ways, but would be nice to have something a bit faster.

Yes, please.

Our company deals with this on every project. We use 14" I-joist rafters for insulation value, and step them down to 5 1/2" outside the building envelope; at the eave and rake overhangs (nobody wants a 14" fascia on a house). This requires modeling two separate roof elements every time (not very efficient).

Thank you @artay4LN6E for posting this important topic.

Simply you need to select your roof and go to the properties panel. For the Rafter Cut under construction select (Two Cut - Plumb) and set the Fascia Depth at 5 1/2" or whatever you want.

Thanks for the suggestion @KhaledAlSayyed , however changing the fascia cut will only cut the vertical face of the roof element to a specific dimension. It will not allow the entire overhang (the portion beyond the exterior wall sheathing) to step down to a smaller dimension. Something like this:

@aaronBWC
yeah, I see what you mean. I am not sure if there is any way to do this other than creating 2 separate roofs. However, I us the "plumb square" option and then create Detail Item (masking) in sections. If you want to have an exterior horizontal soffit, in this case you can use the "Plumb" option as-is.

No easy solution for it currently, hence the idea that it be a new feature.

This something I have struggled with for a while, I use a variation of work arounds, some mentioned in these comments. I see the original IDEA was posted at the start of 2021, how much attention is paid to this?

Here's my workaround:

Architecture: Build --> Component --> Model in Place --> Roofs

Name block according to elevation (such as "South Dormer Cut") if doing multiple

Set Reference Plane to Fascia

Select Void Form Extrusion

Create extrusion of what you would like to delete -- align inner edge to wall face

Cut

Finish Model

Paint revealed surface to match adjacent wall

Hide linework in view

Use hide lines
