idea UX improvement: dblclick template = new project en Revit Ideas

I see this one at least 2 to 3 times a week, and have been seeing it for almost 5 years now. Might be worth looking into.

A user has an RTE template. The user double clicks on the template file. Revit opens the template file for editing.

User thinks they've opened a new project. Works on it, saves, saves, saves, 25 hours later they've managed to create a full model inside a 300 MB RTE file. And then they go to post-process, the file doesn't show up, it's a tragedy, you get called... you figure out what the problem is and have to tell them to convert formats.

And then 3 days later you find out not only did they have to convert, but they also messed up the RTE file on the server and now the whole department is cleaning up junk in models they created with the messed up RTE.

98% of users learned that in Windows when you want to open a file for editing, you double click it. AutoCAD users learned to open a file for editing by double clicking (especially when they're not in charge of making the drawings from scratch). And now, everyone's double clicking on RVT and RTE files and expecting the same behavior.

Double clicking an RTE should by default give you the "New project" dialog with the RTE file in the selection window. RTE editing should be done only by direct "Open" command with an "are you sure" dialog along the way. Should be an easy fix to implement, I'm sure most users will be grateful.

You need to Write-protect the folder your Templates are in so only a few people can edit them.

We have our templates and family files in a read-only folder, exactly to prevent this from happening. As a BIM/Revit manager you just need to assume your colleagues are idiots, and need to protect them against themselves.
