We got an idea to link levels to phases.

When you do have an existing building, you can link the levels from the existing building to the existing phase. Than create new levels and link them to the new construction phase.

When you want to draw something, all levels are shown in the pull down menu behind the constraints and you have to scroll down to find the levels you want to use.

When you're in a view with the new construction phase, the levels from the existing phase should not be shown in the pull down menu behind the constraints, so you do not have to scroll past all levels.

I like the idea, mainly for the fact that where we have an existing building, not all of the levels will be retained/are relevant in the proposed phase.

I would like to have the simple option to add phases to my Grid Lines.

We have a lot of projects that exist of expansion of a building, and therefore we have existing grid lines and new grids for the expansion.

The workaround for now is to hide every grid manually per view, which takes unnecessary time.

There is also the issue of duplicate numbering - typically both existing and new projects have grids 1, 2, 3, a, b, c, etc. I've added an "e" prefix before existing grids to get around it before, which also allows me to filter them, but it isn't a BIM solution.

The project I had already had two sets of grids in the "Existing" scope, modeled as a single model. Unless the grids are on a separate workset or are a different family type you can't filter them, and the revit link "custom" option isn't granular enough (I usually want everything else to be "By Host"

You would think it would be easy to add Phase parameters to Grids and Levels, but extra logic would need to be added for the duplicate names. Would Revit just ignore duplicates? or would it have to manage them (to make sure they don't exist in the same phase - or at least don't "remain" in the same phase)? Current WORKAROUNDS: create different Types and use Filters (for phasing); add invisible characters (such as ZWNJ) to names (for duplicates).

Levels and Grids should have phasing options. We do a lot of phasing with existing buildings and the ability to phase the existing/previous levels and grids would be very helpful. We currently use worksets as a work-around but its cumbersome at best.

In "real life", existing grids (structure) stay, and new grids (structure) will be created. So why in Revit it doesn't works as well as the rest?

For now, we change the grid's bubbles so that the existing ones are filled with gray and the new ones are not filled but they appear in all the project phases, as they shouldn't.

Thank you for considering my idea

I agreed.

Meanwhile, we use a different family symbol for the existing grids, but that's just a workaround. I would also add that previous grids and new grids could sometimes have the same numbering, which is not allowed in Revit. Once again, there is workaround for this, but this should be supported by Phases attribute.

I usually put the separate phases of grids on separate worksets and shut off the visibility of a particular workset in visibility graphics. Works for view templates or individual views. Phasing the grids would be faster, but this is an ok work-around.

Working on renovations, it's common to have a set of levels for the existing phase and a new set of levels for the new construction. These end up clogging elevations and sections unnecesseraily. Adding phase parameters to levels would allow quick management of which levels to show on each drawing, saving a lot of time.
