idea Use instance properties in family formulas en Revit Ideas

It would be great if instance properties, such as level, offset, workset, phase, comments, room, space, location coordinates, etc, etc, could be passed into family and be used in family formulas.

For example, if an electrical outlet needs to be numbered with room name prefix, it’s better to be able to pass room name to the outlet family, then a parameter can be setup like
OutletNumber = room name + NumberInRoom
In this case, obviously, text functions (which Revit does not have) are needed too.

This will dramatically increase the power of families.

There are some similarities to this Idea: Reporting for X/Y/Z point for families

@kimberly_fuhrman-jones Maybe combine the ideas?

Hi, @Mark.Friis , thank you for the suggestion. I think the two are similar, but different enough to keep separate. The X/Y/Z point is more of a specific request. Thanks for your input...it's truly appreciated!

Hi, @kimberly_fuhrman-jones . I disagree with you on that point. As the author of reporting-x-y-z-point-for-families I think the x y z point is a "subpart" of the more general concept of how to get "inplace" values or instance propertys as described by @zhaohui.chen5TEA7 in his intial post. I had a some time ago a request about that, see CaseNo:15832033 "Acces "In Place" Window Sill Heigt In Window Families To Drive Geometry".

Back in 2015 I wrote a paper called "Time For Analysing The Model" (A short proposal for the amelioration of information analyses in a revit model in 3 points) which I tried to send to the devellopement Team @harlan_brumm without any succes. If there is still some interest for these ideas you can contact me by private message, we could have a zoom session where I could share my ideas.

Greetings from Vienna

Jakob

Hi @kimberly_fuhrman-jones ,

I think @zhaohui.chen5TEA7 is speaking about 2 main ideas:

1. Getting "in place" values in into families. My case CaseNo:15832033 "Acces "In Place" Window Sill Heigt In Window Families To Drive Geometry" was an exemple for that.

2. Combining text and Number parameters into a new parameter which is a common concept of programming known as concatenation. As familiy building is very near to programming this function is essential and for the moment just very partially realised in the family enviroment.

My reporting-x-y-z-point-for-families is a method how to get easily geometric "in place" information into families. Most of the parts of this concept are technically implementet in revit.

To be honest, one should reformulate a more general concept to integrate our 2 "ideas". If there is a chance to see this feature in revit 2022 I would invest the time to do so, I have allready done a part in my paper called "Time For Analysing The Model" (A short proposal for the amelioration of information analyses in a revit model in 3 points). Also a discussion with the developement Team would be helpful. Please keep me informed.

Let me get the input of the development team on the best way to approach these two Ideas. I can always combine them and rename the thread to a more general description. This way the votes will be combined and boosted. I will get back to you on this soon!
