As Revit Roadmap have Steel Fabrication item - we need structural steel stairs and railings families as in Advance Steel.

May be in common would be better to have universal steel structure skeleton where bone will be base line for structural framings, something like 3D truss family or upgraded Structural Framing - Complex and Trusses. Then we can do stairs and railings by using this structure.

We need to able to use steel framing elements, be able to tag the framing elements with the framing tag and extract information from the steel framing elements for validation and cost schedule. The stairs need to be able to accommodate an easy match or set up to facilitate the continues change from the Architects.

Architects spend a lot of time modeling and coordinating stairs, why not just let the stair use real steel elements in the stair mode, that will save a lot of time. Right now we have to copy the stair and model all the framing elements to make the stair works is a waste of time when the stair is already modeled by the architect.

But this method has poorly automated.

Me need a lot of truss families for each number of balusters and also need to manually apply miter and sawcut connection between handrails and balusters, and connections forRailings baluster to bearing beam.

With regards to schedules will need ability to set a base length i.e. the supplier offers steel in .5m increments and the piece you require is 1.8m therefore you will be required to buy a 2m piece. It must then also show the cut length of 1.8m

with regards to modeling the ability to fine tune the cut. Inventor has the ability to sketch a profile on a plane and then do a cut as per user specified depth or thru all. Perhaps Revit can adopt a similar approach.

USE REAL STEEL SECTIONS IN STAIR TOOL

Wouldn't it be great to have real steel sections in the stair tool making up the stringers and landings, instead of just "fake" sections created using profiles. This would have the advantage of being able to use the steel tools on them along with connections. We use revit for a high level of detail in our models and that would be a great help with regard to consistency on drawing views where real steel sections are used alongside these stairs.

Hmm....i would much prefer that if time was spent on refining how the support stringers can be modeled. Attention should be given to how it terminates, e.g. at the floor levels, or the transitions at mid-landings. The current tool only allows for a vertical or horizontal slice, and almost always, the stringer extends beyond the last riser, and is trimmed vertically. Impossible to model using the OOTB tools.

Regarding steel sections? It is actually really easy to create profile families using the same out-of-the-box type AISC type catalogs that the structural framing families utilize. Nothing fake about profiles using these tables.

Personally, I would have little need for this, but see no harm in providing it -- as long as the bigger issues of resolving the modeling difficulties are addressed first.
