topic Mill/Turn Radial milling CAM in Fusion Manufacture

Hello!

I have a problem and need your advice. I need to mill a part in a 3 axis Haas turning center. I want to use a radial driven tool. I was trying to use 2d adaptive and some other options but none of this seems to work. I was changing 'tool orientation' but it did not help at all.

It is really hard to explain for me what I want to do so I put a link:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wH-R0ud2Tew

Toolpath is between 1:33 and 2:37 in that video.

Thank you!

Well, video shows use of Y axis, 3 axis(XZC) cannot cut that part. For your part, you are limited to being able to drill hole only on Y0 position, that means you cannot interpolate hole, tools need to be big enough on diameter to drill and chamfer hole by driving X axis alone.

For the flats, you can only do it in polar mode with tool orientation parallel to Z axis.

You would want to turn only deep enough to clear end mill and take light cuts as you get closer to finish thickness.

Once milling is done you turn the rest of the shaft and cut off.

Actually I overlooked the fact that you can also mill flats by having tool large enough in diameter to overlap the flats, mount it in Radial direction and driving it in Z direction.

My lathe does have Y axis (it's Haas ST-15y).

OK, then you have all the options in the world to make that part.

Rough and finish turn just past the flats, do not undercut, use that stock for rigidity during milling.

Mill one flat leaving stock, add to pattern to do the other side.

Drill hole

Rough mill hole using bore cycle

Finish flats

Finish bore using 2D contour and wear compensation

Chamfer both sides using 2D contour and chamfer option

Rough and finish turn past flats, take light roughing cuts due to interrupted cut.

Rough and finish shaft

Cut off

After every update of Fusion, I like to program a job to see if there are any changes that effect the way I do things.

In this case I noticed that in order to be able to profile from outside to inside, you have to turn on "Allow Radial grooving".

This is known old bug that has not yet been fixed.

Posted fine using DS30SSY.cps

I haven't exactly followed my layout in earlier post but that's the nature of the beast, some things become evident

as you progress thru work flow and realize you need to adjust original strategy.

Some tweaking may be in order depending on material in question, use at your own risk.
