I was playing with the Nester script and generating CAM toolpaths for a test project (nothing I intend to actually build), and when I simulated the CAM toolpath I noticed something that I have seen before - sometimes the path seems to not retract all the way above the stock and drag partially through the stock when traveling from one countour to another. In this example this only happens in one place where you can see a vertical line between the two rectangles on the right. All the other travels for this model seem to retract just fine.

I've attached the f3d file for this model. Is this something I'm doing wrong or maybe a bug? Since it only happens in one spot I don't see how it would be user error, but who knows.

Thanks, but then my next question is why does Fusion do this by default - does it make sure to use the max depth setting when taking that shortcut through the material? Is it pretty much always safe to leave that feature on?

Or am I just doing it wrong by selecting unconnected paths for a single contour operation?

I believe if you hover your mouse over any text field (such as in Hughe's screenshot; the Safe Distance field) and right click you mouse, you can "Make All Default" and that will set the behavior of the "Keep Tool Down"

Thanks for the tip, the big question now is whether I should be leaving it on or not and whether I'm misusing the contour function by selecting disconnected contours in a single operation.

I wouldn't say that you are "misusing it", I do the same myself. That's not saying that is the right way, but I've not heard or read otherwise

No, multiple contours in a single toolpath is a strength, IMO. That said, the stay down function is being misunderstood here, and can be a boon in multiple-contour operations, but in this case is hindering the desired behavior. Shortening the Maximum Stay Down Distance will help.
