Tips on running VRED on a Notebook

Hi everybody,

here is a quick tip for anyone trying to run VRED on a Notebook with Nvidia's Optimus Technology.

Since the Geforce Drivers don´t recognize VRED it might be necessary to create a custom 3D Setting for VRED, otherwise the internal Intel Graphics will be used, which sadly is quite unstable and can cause a lot of crashes. To do this, open the Nvidia control panel,  go to manage 3D Settings and add the VREDPro.exe, VREDDesign.exe or VRED.exe depending on the version you are using. Then set the preferred graphics processor to the High Performance NVIDIA processor.

To check which GPU VRED is currently using, startup VRED and go to Help -> GL Info -> Extensions. The third entry under Graphics Hardware should read "NVIDIA Corporation" if everything worked correctly.

Something similiar might be required for Notebooks with an ATI/AMD Graphics processor but sadly I had not have a chance to test one of these.

Hope this helps

Michael
