rendering technique

Any thoughts on how to create a rendering like this on in the MEP load screen?  I like the way that some of the elements have tranparency and the line look of the stuff above ceiling.  It's a very artistic look for mechanical equipment. Thanks.

I dont think you will produce this from a straight render.  I think it is a photosomething production.

Without too much knowing, I think it is a render, copy laid over the top with transparency and an effect applied to the top one.  The shadows look from a proper render but the black edge outlines are from an effect applied.
