searching this ng

How do we search this newsgroup these days? I'm using Microsoft Internet Explorer to view it. I see two search hyperlinks; one at the top of my screen that searches autodesk.com, and one right above the message thread list that bumps my back to the newsgroup index, but nothing seems to allow the topical searches that were possible until fairly recently.

Me too.

Why?

Since nobody has answered us by now, I'm starting to wonder if it is no longer possible. That would be a shame, as it would disable this ng as a research tool.

I remember someone talking about using google.com as a newgroup search
engine.

i posted this question on another newsgroup and the answer i got was that it has been disabled for the time being.(cleaning up the ng structure) There was no mention of when it would be working again.

Hello, Mr. Middleton. Was thinking about that earlier so I tried google advanced search, with restricting domain to this ng's domain generating string,"lwpolyline site:discussion.autodesk.com". No hits. So tried, "lisp site:discussion.autodesk.com". No better. Not very reassuring. Control group (to preclude operator error) of "google site:www.google.com" and got back about two thousand. So that's a puzzler. I wonder what would happen if somebody were to hit that little "view all" link under the threads.......I'm on a pentium 200....I'm kind of scared to hit it.......

My solution is to view newsgroups through Microsoft
Outlook Express.  It has always been easier and faster for me to
search view and download messages that way.

Try this url. You will probably have to cut and paste it, since the last character seems
to have been exluded from the hyperlink.

I don't know much about google but you can search
autodesk.autocad.customization instead of discussion.autodesk.com to narrow
it down a bit.

I've done that, it works ok.  But it takes
30-60 seconds on our T1, so if you've got a slower connection you'll be waiting
a bit.  It works fine so long as the thread your looking for is titled
close enough to what your looking for, since you'd only be searching the subject
lines.

I'd look into using Outlook Express.  It could
use a lot of improvement, but it works ok for me.

Ben,

Actually, Google can search for words in subject and inside
messages as well (just like Dejanews always could). You have
many options at advanced search page,

http://groups.google.com/advanced_group_search

The problem with Google is, it doesn't get all the postings
from autodesk's server, it's been so for some years now
and autodesk doesn't seem to care. They could've improved
the quality of their link with Dejanews (now Google) since
it has such a wonderful search engine and they can't do
even the simplest kind of it right, but they just don't seem
to care.

Google's search is usually very fast. You can use
*autocad* as newsgroup name, or *cad* etc. to further
narrow the search down. 30 sec is _very_ unusual.
