I am in the process of going from 14 to 2002. Is there
a way in Explorer to have my R14 drawings have the red icon while
2002 drawings have the blue icon?
That is handled by Windows (file type) and there is no way to distinguish
between files having the same extension. If you open a folder and goto
{Tool ->Folder Options -> File types} you can see how windows handels the
different file types on your computer.
Sorry

With just AutoCAD, it's one or the other. DwgShellEx offers a solution to
that problem and much more:

I seem to have found some freeware for making
drawing icons in Explorer relate to the Acad version.

Wow, awesome utility! Thanks for the url, now I don't have to try to
remember which version was used to create the drawing file. Thanks for the
post.

Well, it doesn't work completely for me in Win98.
Do you have a specific Url for your tool? I couldn't
find it from their home page.
