No more NNTP access to adsk newsgroups

Do you access these newsgroups with a newsreader?
Autodesk is pulling the plug on NNTP access soon.

Interestingly enough I have been shoping cad systems.
My number one question is: Do you have a newsgroup for developers?
The answer for most is: No. Decision made. or.... Maybe I should hold that
thought?

This is one I frequent.

http://www.draftsperson.net/forum/

While it is more on the drafting side, and postings are not that high
and it does get its fair share of spam however they try to keep things
clean and on topic, there are special interest groups there, so with
more participation who knows what could happen 🙂

After all, these groups may be hosted by Autodesk, but the vast
majority of the participation comes from those using it.

These forums are what WE make of them and not what the hosters make of
them. They can be as popular or as unpopular as those using or not
using it make them.

Maybe the penny will drop when all they hear is crickets 🙂

What I do not like about the Autodesk web forums is that you cannot
set it to just list new posts in a set of groups that you want to look
through in one action. You have to go to each group and then search
for new messages in it. Threading is also hopeless.

No. It became "Never enough time to do it properly; always enough time
to do it again"!

Chaps,

I've been accessing the web forum now for about ten years, having never been able to get the newsreader side to work. I've received loads of help and passed some back. I've never received spam as a direct result of my access so I'm happy with Autodesk's security. I'm used to the web format - searching is fairly simple and so long as the threads don't get too long, navigation is easy. I'll be disappointed if it's changed too much. Bentley (5p in the swear box) updated their dinosaur of a forum some years back and although they brought a modern look to the forum it's not very intuitive.

It will be a shame if the new web-only access scares away some very knowledgable CADers and programmers. Not bothered about the thickos though!

But what I'm saying is that limiting this forum to the website interface only is *not* "sabotaging peer-to-peer support." That kind of support occurs via the website all the time already, and will no doubt continue. It only sabotages peer-to-peer support among those who are unwilling to use the website interface. That may keep some people away, but the direct competition with their money-making support options will still exist, and on a forum they host themselves, so I doubt that's really their motivation.

The peer-to-peer support here directly competes with Autodesk subscription support, paid support, and reseller support.

I don't see why it would be difficult to understand the motive for sabotaging peer-to-peer support.

I use the Eternal September server - http://www.eternal-september.org/    Some old AutoCAD groups there too!
Oh, and the other very nice thing about a good NNTP client is the Kill Filter Smiley Wink
With kind regards,

I am sure this is exactly the reason. I can't count the times I have answered on autodesk surveys, what I do when I have a problem is go directly to the newsgroup via my newsreader.
