Possible to insert block from external DWG w/o inserting whole DWG?

I have a 'block libary' (a DWG w/ a lot of block references) that I want to access from my VBA program. I would like to be able to insert a specifed block from the file without having to insert the *whole* file, similar to the Design Center 'drag-and-drop blocks from DWG' capability. I could insert the whole file and then purge everything out when I am done, but I'd prefer only to import what is necessary. Is this possible or is it a Design Center feature that has not been exposed to developers? I have not been able to figure any way to do it so far...
