Yes, I've experienced that before on a couple of boxes in the office. We
use a black background in model space. Our text normally displays green on
screen and in the editor. On the problem machines, though, the text editor
display was almost completely washed out. The editor background was grey
and the text was a really faded green. You could hardly tell it was there
except by highlighting all of it.
In our case, it only occured in R14 and our machines were NT4 or Win2000, do
not remember which. Both machines were HP Kayaks of slightly different
vintage. I tried everything I could think of with AutoCAD and Windows
display settings without success. Updating video display drivers didn't
work, either. One machine miraculously stopped exhibiting this behavior
after a couple of weeks. The other one we rebuilt and gave to a non-CAD
user.
