Add Change Category to right-click menu

It would be awesome if we could get Change Category added to the file-based right-click menu, above or below the Change State command. It's a pain to move from where you are to click on the menu bar or do an Alt+A Y command.

How often and why are you changing the file's category?

The reason it is not on the right-click menu is because it is not often used and the menu is already long.

@ihayesjr

We change the category very frequently. All of our Frame Generator .iam files as well as the skeleton.ipt and Tube & Pipe .iam and route.ipt files are defaulting to 'Base' for the category. We have not found a way to change the default on these. The sub components pipes and frame members are defaulting to 'Content Center' which is fine. We design large process systems that may contain multiple skeletons, frames, runs, and routes.

We have tried utilizing the Inventor Vault tab where change category is eaily found on the right-click menu. However, we have found it to be unstable. At random times, when we click on change category, the dialog box pops up, then disappears, no where to be found again. This locks us up in Inventor and we ultimately must do an 'End Task' which is less than fun.

So we have defaulted to doing changes within Vault. Most times, but not all, we are changing things within the assembly to be our company engineering category. So we can sort by category and do mass selections between the purchased parts that are base and the engineering parts and assemblies that are base, but it does take a bit of time and attention to detail.

If there is a way to default the Frame Generator and Tube & Pipe files to something different, this would greatly reduce our click-count. I'd be very interested to hear how to do that within inventor.

BTW, great job at AU this year!

Thanks for the AU compliment.

How are you naming your Tube and Pipe files?

Are there special properties that indicates that it is a Tube and Pipe part?

We are using default Tube and Pipe filenames. I'm have not found anything to show how to default the created runs and routes to a different category within the Tube and Pipe Runs.iam template file that Inventor uses when creating new runs and routes.

Try creating a category rule with the Folder Path property. Meaning if the Folder Path contains "Tube and Pipe" assign the file to a specific category.

A custom rule is a great idea! We'll give it a shot. Thanks.

@jzurekAE9GF: For Frame generator stuff you can use the folder path. It always contains the string “Frame”. And pipes will always contain the iProperty “PL”.
