Vault with Windows and SQL Server

Both Windows Server and SQL Server require the purchase of "Client Access Licenses - CAL" in order for the clients to communicate with the server.

Is it necessary to have a seperate CAL for each client for BOTH Windows Server AND SQL Server?

For example: A total of 25 clients (users) for Vault. Does this mean 25 Windows CALS AND 25 SQL CALS? Or, in the case of SQL, is only 1 CAL required in TOTAL since the Vault Server recieves the request and then passes that to SQL (thereby meaning that SQL Server is unaware of how many vault clients since it only recieves requests from Vault Server)?

Thanks,

Steve

It is not necessary to have a separate CAL for each client for BOTH Windows Server AND SQL Server, but you should speak with your reseller.

The only 'client' that access the SQL Server is the Autodesk Data Management Server (ADMS). No real Autodesk client (such as Vault Explorer or Productstream) accesses the SQL server directly, therefore my personal opinion is that you need only one CAL for SQL server and that's the one for ADMS.

Hope this helps,

Is this a fact or just your personal opinion? I totally agree with you and I've had arguments with resellers about this. Most of them I've spoken to don't agree but that could be because they want to sell more CALs.

Can anybody confirm that this is the case?

Thanks

Andreas,

You will need one SQL CAL for all users that access Autodesk Vault.
You can find more information here
http://www.microsoft.com/sql/howtobuy/default.mspx
and the document here
http://www.microsoft.com/sql/howtobuy/sqlserverlicensing.mspx is helpful in
understanding.
If you need more assistance you should talk with your Microsoft reseller.

This is still not clear. Is it one for "all" users, or one for "each" user. Thanks

Sorry, I should have said you need one SQL CAL for each vault user.
So if you have 20 vault users you will need 20 SQL CALs.
