Vault Server connection problem turned to reinstall problem

We recently upgraded our Vault Server to a Domain Controller using DCpromo.exe. After a successful upgrade, I attempted to access the vault through a client workstation. I got the red “!” next to the server name of the login screen. I tried both the computer name (with and without the domain) and the IP address. When I was unsuccessful, I opened the Data Management Server at the server to verify everything was working properly which it was. I could still ping the server and see it through Network Neighborhoods. Then I ran the Vault diagnostics. It hung up at “Checking for known firewall.” At this point, I figured the best thing to do was to backup the Vault Data, uninstall the Data Management Server and all its components, and then reinstall it. Unfortunately upon reinstall, it hung up on “Checking for known firewall” again and never installed.

The server upgrade to a domain controller may have caused the problems. However, this was our second attempt at upgrading the server. After the first server attempt was unsuccessful, we had to remove services that we didn’t need and were potentially causing problems. I stayed away from services I knew the Vault was dependant on such as Framework and SQL. Any ideas on what could be causing these problems?

We recommend not having the Vault on a Domain Controller since it could
hinder performance due to the server becoming really busy handling other
services.
However during your promotion to a Domain Controller did you by chance
install the Routing and Remote Access Service? If so can you stop this
service?
Also, open IIS and go to the Default Web Site. Right-click on it and select
browse. A web page should come up. It should be the "Under Construction"
page or possibly the IIS Administration page or another page other then a
web page error.

Let me know what you see.

I understand your concern with loading Data Management Server on a domain controller. However, we’re a small network hosting no more that 30 IP clients at one time. The main domain controller was originally where Data Management Server resided. Data Management Server worked fine there though we only had up to three users accessing it at one given time. We recently moved it to a smaller server that will have less than 10 IP clients and those same three users accessing it at one given time. It seemed to work fine up until we decided to upgrade the new server to a domain controller. We need the Vault server to be it’s own domain controller because of some tricky network structure we need to implement.

Remote access is installed and is stopped. It wasn’t even configured.

IIS Administration does come to the “under construction” page and everything looks normal.

There’s still no resolution yet. We can’t access our Inventor files without the vault. One thing I’ve noticed is group policies have been having problems according to the event viewer since SP4 and the latest updates of Windows 2000 Server. Could this be an issue that affected the Vault since we recently upgraded the Server to a Domain Controller? Are there other settings I should look into that might be affecting it?

In the %Temp%\Autodeskdatamanagement direcotry on the server you should find
some logs. Please zip them and post.

From your client computer, please open Internet Explorer and type
http://PEF-TALLAHASSEE/AutodeskDM/Services/Securityservice.asmx

You should see a sign in screen. Also I notice that you are using McAfee
Anti-virus software.
Are you using this on your desktop systems as well? Is this the enterprise
edition?

When I use that link from the client, I get…

---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Server Error in '/' Application.

Description: HTTP 404. The resource you are looking for (or one of its dependencies) could have been removed, had its name changed, or is temporarily unavailable. Please review the following URL and make sure that it is spelled correctly.

Requested Url: /AutodeskDM/Services/Securityservice.asmx
---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Perhaps this is because after having problems with the vault, I backed up the data and uninstalled it hoping to reinstall it and problems would be resolved. Now I can’t reinstall it as I indicated earlier.

Yes, we are using McAfee Enterprise addition on both the Server and the Clients. However, I successfully installed Autodesk DM on the server before it was a Domain Controller. When I attempted the reinstall of Autodesk DM, I shutdown all the McAfee services and it had no effect.

Ok, open the IIS Manger on the server. Expand the Default Website and got
to that AutodeskDM virtual directory.
Open it's properties and look in the Virtual Directory tab. Verify that the
directory is correct. Then expland until you see the securityservice.asmx
file, right-click on it and select Browse. What page shows?

The AutodeskDM virtual directory is not there.

There seems to be alot of troubleshooting that needs to be done. Are you
under a current subscription? If so, please log a Support Request at the
support website.
My next question would be: Is there a proxy server on the network anywhere?

Yes there is a proxy, but it's outside our facility and beyond my control. However, it's never caused a problem on previous installations.
